If Calgary misses the playoffs will it be the biggest debacle of the season?

How about never having won a playoff game? That sounds like a bad situation.
One is past history. One is present situation. Something in the past that will be changed pretty soon seems much better than a present that is crappy.

At this moment would you rather have had a flat tire once last year but be driving a nice new car with awesome tires?

Or at this moment be stuck in Nowheresville in a downpour with 4 flats and no spare or tire iron in the trunk?

So there's that....

really eh??? If Arizona just won all their home games they would probably make the playoffs comfortably....you can’t just say oh well if we had this or that then we would be fine...you don’t have a winning record at home cause the team is flawed and the stadium sucks and the players don’t want to play there
Arizona sucks just like the Habs. Flames are going to miss the playoffs but they are ok with the young core they have. Next season will be bettet.

Really think flames needed to have bottomed out. Draft a top d and a top goalie. Bringing in a 35? Year old stop gap goalie gets you to ninth maybe eighth place. Monahan is not a top line centre and building through free agency is impossible. Also trading first round picks for a depth dman was a bad move.

It's up there. Especially if the pick moves up.

Ottawa trading their 1st and then becoming a lottery team is up there too. Though we'll have to wait to see how they do next year.

It will be a bigger debacle if the pick given up in the Hamonic deal becomes a top 3 pick with a lottery win. That would be a disaster for them.

No. I correctly predicted this outcome well before the season began. Anyone who didn't see it coming are either Flames homers or don't know crap about hockey.

Edmonton was the biggest debacle.

10 years? Try 30.
Well, they DID go to the finals 14 years ago, in 03/04. But yeah, that's pretty much their only notable season in a long time, and it was a bit of a Cinderella run, they weren't a very strong team in the regular season that year. Their highest regular season finish in the last ~27 years is 6th in the league, and other than that one run to the finals, they've only only made it past the 1st round once (2014/15, when they lost in 5 games in the 2nd round to the Ducks).

I think it's fair to say "they've been mediocre-to-terrible almost every season over the past ~27 years", but there's been at least one good season in there.

Makes no sense. Goalies and defence typically take multiple years to develop and are very unpredictable. Your plan would've had the Flames forwards on the downtown by the time either of those picks potentially turned out. The Flames lucked out big time picking up Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Monahan. You just have to build around that.

Pretty much gave up the ghost tonight.

222 goals against on the year. Would be a lot worse if they didn't run 6 #1D on a nightly basis.

Why are their so many Oiler fans here trying to bait a reaction here as if their season arguably hasnt been the most pathetic and disapointing season in the last 10 or so years. Cup favorites to lottery favorites with no one to blame but their own players and coaching staff. Be humble since the Oilers collapse has been even more embarassing especially due to the high expectations and being the summer cup champs
