they won a lot of games from lockout until last year or two...top 3-5 in nhl iirc...would have absolutely no problem with him taking over this team, McPhee never won anything in Washington but they won a lot of games and he's winning a lot of games again in Vegas...I'd take Bob Murray as well if ANA move on from him, same for Poile in NSH...
He's had 18 years to build a Cup winner. And the team is in about the worst shape ever, right now.

the problem is Stan has been spinning his tires for multiple seasons now and so if a new GM means starting from scratch then lets get this over with...rather see a new gm come in and start from scratch than Stan make a couple desperation moves to salvage his job when he's half way out the door with the allegations against the organization
So, you criticize Bowman, who has 3 rings, for "spinning his tires". Meanwhile you tout Wilson, who has done absolutely nothing but spin his tires for 18 years.

Yup, makes perfect sense.

Not just spun but kept going all in on the future not getting or keeping 1st round picks often and getting 1 cup appearance out of it.

they've missed the playoffs for like 5 years now...how much worse can it really get, worst thing that can happen is Stan is given the green light to make significant moves and they turn around and fire him in the next months and some new execs have to deal with the aftermath
Wow it's almost as if rebuilding takes time.

Aside from the stupid Panarin trade, Stan has made so many solid moves for this team. I fear a new GM coming in and ruining that. It is so hard to find a good one. Just look at all the dumb GMs in the league.

this was from late 2018...lets not act like he didn't have a great stretch of 10+ years as gm...stan had a good run too but the entire point of this conversation is to talk about replacements, doug wilson would be a fine replacement for stan..

Wilson has put the Sharks in a much worse position than the Hawks, without winning any cups, and he would be a fine replacement? He also traded away a shitload of those drafted players. The Karlsson trade and signing was one of the biggest mistakes in the NHL over the last decade. Come on. If you want Bowman fired, at least suggest someone that will be an UPGRADE.

they've had 3 less wins the last two seasons versus chicago and were 6th best team in the league in 2018-19 season...

This. Wilson no only has no Cups, but only 1 appearance in the Finals...I like him, but he's not an upgrade.

There's one answer here: Gorton.

You want someone who could potentially be here long-term that has a history of hoarding valuable assets. The Rangers were/are on the cusp of being a true contender until numnuts Dolan stepped in. The Kakko pick doesn't look amazing at the moment, but he was the consensus #2 at the time and there's plenty of other solid moves he made like getting the Norris winner for a steal of a deal.

Gorton would be great. I want a change period but you have a perfect fit in Gorton coming from another big market and team willing to spend $$$$ to ours. It’s almost like it makes too much sense.

I just hope they put a freeze on Bowman and any long term contracts or moves until this stuff is sorted out. Don’t need to handcuff the next GM.

calgary drafted adam fox, he wouldn't sign with them, then he wouldn't sign with carolina because he wanted to go to new york...all gorton had to do was extend an offer at that point...that said gorton did put together a nice body of work during his time in new york and would be the most obvious choice as he's a free agent atm

I'm not sure what your point is. They have one of the worst prospect pools in the NHL, and are in a terrible position, cap wise. Without winning anything. He has made some brutal trades and signings over the years. Bowman's worst mistake doesn't even make Wilson's top 5. Wilson is similar to Bowman, except Bowman actually built a good enough team around his core to win multiple cups...

Almost two decades as a GM, and only one SCF appearance.

Yeah but the Lightning are his team and everyone knows it. He's doing a very good job with Detroit. Their rebuild is very promising even if they're missing that stud C.

so the team that Stan inherited was Dale and Mike Smith's team then right? those GMs acquired every significant piece of the core other than Hossa (even though Tallon signed him, we all know the story)...Tampa is Yzerman's team despite the fact that he left before they won a cup, Dale and Mike Smith left before the Hawks won a cup...is that the story we're going with here as far as who team is who when a gm leaves before a team wins...

Everyone knows Yzerman built that Lightning team, so the cup argument is quite silly.

and so did mike smith and dale tallon for the hawks, the same cups you're giving credit to yzerman for you're also taking away from dale and mike smith and awarding to stan...so if stan is being awarded chicago's cups then why are you taking away tampa's cups from brisebois and giving them to yzerman...its the same exact situation, yzerman left and briseboise was there to see the cup runs, dale and mike smith left and bowman was there to inherit the cup teams...

The 2010 team was definitely Dale's team.

The 2013 and 2015 teams were Bowman's.

The 2011-12 teams were bad enough to prove that.
