The only thing holding San Jose back, back in the day, was goaltending. Nabokov was brutal, and then they got Niemi, who was good, but not great.

Back when Nabokov was young he was actually carrying team in playoff run but had no offensive support

They lost in WCF mainly because the Sharks offense had guys like Alexander Korolyuk , Nico Dimitrakos , Alyn McCauley and Nils Ekman in top 6

The 2003-04 Sharks had no business being in WCF with that lineup but Nabokov carried them

Ironically they lost to Kipper who was traded by Wilson to Sharks that year as he decided to stick with Nabokov as his guy in net and they thought Toskala was going to turn out to be stud in future

I was more talking about 2007-2010 Sharks with Nabokov. He was a good regular season goalie, and then shit the bed in the playoffs.

He was bad in 2010 ,, That is not in dispute but in 2007 he was far from problem for Sharks

In that series loss to Wings (6 games) he had .932 sv pct ... Problem was Hasek for Wings had a .938 sv pct

Wings scored 13 goals in that series to the Sharks 9

It was after that year that Nabokov's play fell off with Hawks series being the end of his Shark career

In the end Sharks should have kept Kipper over Nabby but hindsight is 20/20 and everyone at time thought Toskala was future of Sharks franchise in net

the sharks had a really good team for a while...the west was stacked when they had said team, LA and Chicago were just better...Anaheim was up there as well...obviously Detroit during Lidstrom years...

Weak excuse when you factor in the Wings/Ducks/etc weren't issue for Sharks in 04 and 06. Those years they lost to cinderella teams they were heavily favored against (Flames in 04 and Oilers in 06)

Also 2008-09 was a massive choke vs a Ducks team already on decline

Presidents Trophy winning Sharks (53-18-11 for 117 pts) going down to heavy underdog 8th seed Ducks (42-33-7) in 6 cant be spun as anything other then a complete and absolute failure

people overvalue the unknown constantly...Wilson, Poile, Bob Murray etc have decade plus track records of building above average teams in the NHL...sports are cyclical, the same people saying we should give Bowman a pass and let him rebuild are the same ones that think SJ, NSH and Anaheim should've been contenders for ever...and don't kid yourselves, they were contenders to win a cup for multiple years
Good point. He had some of the best teams in the league year after year. Only thing they were missing was a first overall pick like toews or Kane.

I think the Hawks will be in rough shape if Stan has to be replaced.

they've missed the playoffs for like 5 years now...how much worse can it really get, worst thing that can happen is Stan is given the green light to make significant moves and they turn around and fire him in the next months and some new execs have to deal with the aftermath

A new GM means you're starting over and likely blowing it up completely... Be careful what you wish for is always the prudent response when fans want a GM fired.

Yes one aspect overlooked is new GM inherits former GM guys and may ultimately not be fond of them and thus guys who fans view as "Future" quickly turn into trade chips and sometimes it works out and sometimes it sets franchise back

Right. I'm not against moving on from Bowman, but you have to be careful choosing his replacement.

Yeah but Bowman trades all our guys anyway so what’s the difference?

the problem is Stan has been spinning his tires for multiple seasons now and so if a new GM means starting from scratch then lets get this over with...rather see a new gm come in and start from scratch than Stan make a couple desperation moves to salvage his job when he's half way out the door with the allegations against the organization

Shit I was pinning him to be GM or President (Hawks still do need one of those too) when he and Davidson got shit canned.

But at this point, I am also on board with the Hawks getting a new guy a shot who has paid his dues (preferably in an organization like the Hurricanes for example).

More I think of it McDonough was the top brass that 'knew' about this mess...he's the one to blame, president over GM and AsstGM...pretty much clear to me...
