Wife: I’m taking the kids to my moms Saturday, we’ll be gone all day. I told the kids you have to work but I know you don’t.

Me: Wow that’s really nice. I’ll try to get some things done around the house

wife: lol you’re gonna get incredibly stoned and lay around jerking off all day

me: well yeah, there’s that, too

Well Mead Johnson is gone but the west siders do still love to booze it up. They throw a good hootenanny out there.

These people on 4th of July etc lose their minds, driving the Lloyd from downtown to the west side is like what I imagine driving through downtown Mogadishu. Sounds of massive fireworks bombs shaking your car, people firing shitty automatic weapons in the air, people getting hilariously stupid drunk and that’s before the real west side rednecks even show up later on because they had to stop and beat their wives first.

I may be slightly exaggerating, but only slightly

Gotta believe a lot of that applied when I was there but I was mostly insulated from it. I was part of Bristol-Meyers R&D branch (before they relocated it to CT) and so a good portion of my network were professionals that relocated from outside the area. And the "locals" that were friends from some of the company sports leagues I played in were great people. Back then working for Mead Johnson was a really big deal if you were from Evansville so the company probably ended up with the cream of the crop.

I'm sure I wouldn't be able to recognize the city today. I left before they built the Riverwalk and before the casino came in. Looking back, as a young guy relocating to his first career job I think I got very lucky with my situation in Evansville.

Men of the forum. Hi. I was at Food Lion tonight and saw something that prompted thought. A gentleman was walking through the parking lot when he spat onto the ground. Now I don’t want to paint y’all with same brush, certainly not all dudes do this, but I have never in my life thought to myself “I have unwanted spittle in my mouth. Clearly the best place for it is on the ground.” Is there an inability to swallow? Why is this a thing? Please enlighten me.

Any number of reasons for it.

1) it may not have been just spit - maybe he’d been eating sunflower seeds or something

2) he may be a tobacco man

3) sometimes in life you need to hock a loogie, you’ve gotta get some stuff out from the back of your throat, and then once you do what are you supposed to do with it, just put it right back in the back of your throat? No. Spit it out.

4) in lieu of the above and any other number of unlisted reasons, spitting is fun and if you’re doing it on the ground, harmless.

Out of curiosity, of all the things to make you ask, why this Food Lion incident and not the 1,000 times per hockey broadcast that players spit onto the ice from the bench for no real reason?

Food Lion is a sacred place.

No, Harris Teeter is a sacred place. Food Lion is a glorified garbage dump.

Also: all dudes do, from time to time, do this.
Dorothy Lane Market *crosses self* is the true sacred place. But sadly there’s only like 4 of those and they’re back in Ohio. Harris Teeter works. You’re absolutely right about Food Lion. It’s cheap at least.

When I moved down here I was mad that Publix didn’t give out free cookies.

But over time I have come to like Publix better than the ol’ HT.
I don’t really have a Publix on my way enough to become terribly familiar with them. I do miss Kroger though only because they sell Homemade brand ice cream and I’ve not seen it at any of the other stores here. The cherry cordial flavor is the absolute shit.

Disposable income helps. Not knocking it, just saying that HT (without sales and coupons), Publix and Wegmans are very pricey. For some things, it’s probably worth it. For others, Walmart, Aldi, Food Lion, and Lidl are he better choice (time permitting to make multiple trips)

Unpopular opinion, maybe. Dipping tobacco or whatever you call it should be illegal. I drove someone once who was addicted to that shit, they filled up two water bottles in the span of 2 hours, didn't even bother to take the shit with them when they got out of the car, should have thrown it at them. God the smell was awful.

As for Food Lion, they're kind of whatever for me. I'd probably shop there more often but there's at least 3 HT's closer to me and a handful of other stores (Trader Joes, Walmart, Target, Publix, etc.). Used to go to Bi-Lo a lot but they're no more. Food Lion has good cupcakes, so there's that.

I know at least for the "Deep South", Piggly Wiggly is the shit and is a cultural thing, but I've never been a fan to make a long story short.

Honestly this is a great explanation.

By all means spitting is a socially graceless thing to do, but the 3 points above (especially 1 and 3) are a reality for all of us sometimes and one does not necessarily choose the timing.

Wegmans is baller.

These days I mostly shop the Food Dog because I'm lazy and it's close.

A part, big part, most part of me is somewhat offended of the fact that you felt perfectly comfortable coming to ask a board full of supposed men why they spit instead of swallow.

Given our talk about social networks (specifically Twitter) being a tool to make people mad… I’d like to share video of this wonderful Australian fella.

Why is this a thing?
Beyond the 4 explanations above, there's a 5th which doesn't pertain to the example you gave, but is an answer to the question you asked: it's a need due to heavy breathing (@Lempo: easy now). I conferred with my wife just to make sure, and she agrees that when you're doing super-heavy cardiovascular exercise (sprinting, in our case), your body has a near-reflex to expel anything impeding the airway. This also rebuts @Anton Dubinchuk's assertion that hockey players do it "for no good reason".

Run a 5K with an average heart rate of 180+ and don't spit...I triple-dog dare ya.
