The Worst Drivers in America Live in These 20 Cities!

Need to add Charlotte and Atlanta to this list. Also the SC cities need to be higher. Probably Florida too, maybe.
I was going to merely complain about the fact this list is useless with nothing from Massachusetts on it.

Then it showed Fort Collins and I almost fell out of my seat. I lived there for six years and worked as a medic there the whole time. This math does not equal the story. The cops are bored and give out tons of speeding tickets near campus and by the highway. There’s one cop who leads the state in DUI’s there. Maybe they assign blame more often than other cops as well. Me thinks local enforcement effected these numbers a little too much. You wouldn’t hesitate to live there and I’ve never heard a word of complaining about the driving, especially when Denver is far worse.

When I went out to Denver it was borderline impressive. Dudes were making aggressive Massachusetts style lane changes heading over 3-4 lanes at a time while going 70+ to catch an exit Only thing that made it better than Boston in that regard is the traffic was nowhere near as dense. Like, I've never been a passive driver to the point that one of my friends that drives GTD in IMSA thinks I should try my hand at SCCA Miatas, but those guys had me going "jeez these guys are f***ing nuts"

I don't know how Houston is not on that list. It's worse than Atlanta. Everybody runs red lights, people make stupid aggressive lane changes with no turn signals and everybody goes way too fast. If the speed limit says 40, people are going 80 and if you don't keep up you're gonna get rear ended.

Nashville is pretty bad too. I've never gotten to Nashville in less than 3 1/2 hours but Google says its a 2 hour, 10 minute drive. There's ALWAYS some massive traffic standstill.

Shit, there's places in Italy that will pay you to move there. If they had the broadband infrastructure and if I knew Italian I'd do it in a f***ing second. Main hold up at this point is the knowing Italian part

Get a place on a mountain top and use starlink.

Haven't checked them out yet, but yeah as I said the main holdup is not knowing Italian at this point. Of course I could always bypass that and do New Zealand, I'd just have better luck doing that as a brewer than as anything making real money.

I want to travel to New Zealand so badly but I don’t think I’d be able to hang with an orc in a bar fight.

There's still plenty of places in Italy selling 1 Euro houses without an age limit.

I’ve given some actual thought to this.

They’re not giving valuable property away for no reason. Generally these places are the Italian equivalent to living in the downtown of a Laurinberg or Lumberton type of place

If you’re truly down with living in a town of 5000 surly rural Italians, sharing a crumbling 19th Century duplex which you are legally obligated to restore, being only a brief walk from precisely one local restaurant, driving 45 minutes for healthcare, never meeting anyone who doesn’t regard you as a suspicious foreigner, getting your internet through a cafe, getting your cable through a cafe, getting your mail through a cafe,
being only 14 local train stops from a connection to a different train which will eventually take you to a center of culture, making sure you have a steady American income stream because you sure as hell aren’t finding local work, etc then it is a dream come true.

Well, it's all a matter of perspective, isn't it?

First, a stable remote job (or independent wealth) and something like Starlink is an absolute must. Pretty sure that's what they expect; they're not stupid. They know that remote work is what gives people the chance to even try this.

Second, these towns are dying. That's why they're doing this, and they don't have a lot of options. From the stories I've heard, the locals aren't surly, but extremely welcoming. Sure, you're in a village in the middle of nowhere, but if you're even considering such a move, that's part of the point.

Third, for the money it would take to buy a property in Raleigh right now, you could do some pretty incredible renovations on an old Italian house, so long as you accept the fundamental limitations of the structure.

Fourth, the properties vary widely, so you've got to be willing to actually go to Italy and do the legwork. And learn Italian, of course.

I mean, it's a nice fantasy, right? But there are people who are up to this kind of challenge.

this feels like a trap and I'm not sure why, like if I answer Houston then you're gonna bust out some old post I made 7 years arguing that Atlanta's is worse and then I'm in direct conflict with myself from 7 years ago.

or maybe this weed is making me paranoid

Nah I'm being serious. I ask because Atlanta is the worst I've encountered. I've never been to Houston but surely they have a better infrastructure than Atlanta, right? Just shitty or shittier drivers.

Atlanta has never struck me as having terrible drivers, just terrible traffic (and therefore higher density of drivers meaning you see bad ones from time to time).

Anecdotally, when I’m taking a trip up to NC and on I-85 I cross the GA-SC border, I cross myself because it’s uncanny how much more dangerous it feels on those long, 2-lane stretches of I-85 in SC with some of the most cavalier drivers I’ve ever seen (and I do the Atlanta stuff daily).

Sure, you're in a village in the middle of nowhere, but if you're even considering such a move, that's part of the point.

The accounts that I’ve seen from people who tried this do not describe the locals as being welcoming. It’s not like these are tourist areas where the villagers rely on foreigners for their income. These are agricultural communities and the foreigners are explicitly there as carpetbaggers. These programs designed to change the historic character of the place. The minute you show up in town, you are the face of that change.

It’s possible to overcome that, at least to some extent, sure. But let’s be realistic here, you’re not going to move there and start an olive farm and be the deacon of the local parish. It’s going to look a lot more like being the explicit outsider in every social interaction, and having a dangerously strong incentive to make your social connections with other ex-pats.

Honestly the best candidate for the experience is someone who wants to cut ties with their old life and be left the **** alone in their new life.

Third, for the money it would take to buy a property in Raleigh right now, you could do some pretty incredible renovations on an old Italian house, so long as you accept the fundamental limitations of the structure.

If you have the skills to do the work yourself, yes. Otherwise you’re at the mercy of the local market for labor. And much like sourcing specialized labor in any tiny town in the middle of nowhere, that’s going to mean handing the job to an unqualified yokel who likely views you as a mark. There are a lot of ways for it to go badly. Not to mention the distinct Mediterranean culture when it comes to services for hire (e.g. I’ll try and get to it next week, I need to drive my brother to Valerno about his teeth).

If it goes well, you have sunk the money into a nice house in a dead location. That’s not necessarily a problem (perhaps you plan to retire there and never leave) but it is a real financial consideration that there’s no real investment value, hence the property being given away in the first place.

I mean, it's a nice fantasy, right? But there are people who are up to this kind of challenge.

Absolutely. I intend to retire abroad and gave this a serious look as a way to get started early. When I got to the point of hunting down personal accounts, and especially after looking at the actual properties on Streetview, I was like helllll no. The fantasy scenario doesn’t match the reality of what’s being offered.

Of my top 5 closest brushes with death on the road, probably 3 were in Atlanta.

I have never lived anywhere near Atlanta.

Has anybody actually lived in Atlanta? My best guess is that they treat driving like they treat summer lawn watering in the Triangle--MTW, those who live in odd numbered houses have to go 20 miles over the speed limit and those who live in even numbered houses have to go 10 miles under the speed limit. And on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they can go any speed but the evens have to brake randomly and the odds must swerve or ride the passing lane. Prove me wrong....

Oh--and part of the survey includes past traffic citations--which explains why Atl and Houston don't show up--they don't actually give out traffic tickets where Ohio is nothing but a large speed trap where traffic tickets are life for small towns.
