If you're a realist, there has to be a slight chance in the back of your mind that Laine has another down season and scores something like 12 goals.
That would make back to back disappointing seasons and his trade value would in fact drop a good amount
By that logic every gm should try to trade every player, and back to back disappointing seasons? Are we calling 28 goals and 35 assists in 68 games disappointing? That’s 34 goals and 76 points over 82 games.

My point here was that a team shouldn't feel the need to go crazy for a potential acquisition just because he might score 50 goals at some point. A Rocket contender is helpful, sure, but far from a prerequisite for winning it all. This proves the opposite?
My bad, meant 40. Either way this is insignificant.

Pass. The C who made Laine look like a superstar in his draft year...is an actual superstar and a 1C.

The add to Laine for Aho is substantial.

I wouldn't trade Aho for Laine(If I'm CAR), but they are closer than you think:

16-17
Laine 73gp 36g 64pts
Aho 82gp 24g 49pts

17-18
Laine 82gp 44g 70pts
Aho 78gp 29g 65pts

18-19
Laine 82gp 30g 50pts
Aho 82gp 30g 83pts

19-20
Laine 68gp 28g 63pts
Aho 68gp 38g 66pts

Not when posters in this thread and others have suggested that the Canes should make this trade because, well, Laine could score 50 with Aho and Svechnikov/Teravainen.

Most likely he would score 40-50+ if put into position to succeed. Already done that once.

What lesson is that? Get the player for his best and cheapest years then trade him for a fair return? Seems like a good plan. Same with Kane. Some would even say they won both of those trades.
Some people are biased enough, that they take two completely unrelated situations and somehow equate them as identical.

Fine by us. Why don’t y’all keep Laine too. You have him what, this year and the next 2 before he leaves for nothing?

Three years is an eternity. The Hurricanes have just 5 players signed beyond that and only 1 the season following.

4 points in 6 games against the cup champions known for their defensive game is considered disappearing?
Yes when he gets 2 3 goals yes. The he started strong then disappeared after blues adjusted. Great player adjust to being adjusted to and find ways to score. Its not like wpg was short of talent. He just is a 1 trick pony you stop that you stop him

But then don’t great teams adjust to their adjustments being adjusted to?

I bet you are just some 11yr old who hasnt watched a game from Hurricanes or Jets. "Necas played 2c or 3c all season", " Laine just stands still waiting for a pass", "Pesce is a 1D" and "Laine is a 1-trick pony". Jeesus... You just keep on embarraing yourself.

But.... Then the great player will adjust his adjustments to compensate for the adjustments that were implemented to adjust to his adjustments.
At first yes, but then the adjusting team adjusts to the adjustments that were made after they adjusted to the previous adjustments against their original adjustment

...and? He's still played with very good players.

No... You said he gets plenty of time with the best offensive talent on the team and I just showed you that he only played 1/3 of last 3 seasons with the best talent on the team.

In points? Sure

1C that’s signed 4 more years is worth more than a winger who’s RFA with QO rights as of next year, and will likely get a big contract.

Carolinas already paid the heavy signing bonuses MTL strapped them with in that offer sheet and soon his contract is less than his cap hit.

In Covid that contracts gold. If Aho wants to leave after. Then they deal him with 1 year left and can even retain half as his actual dollars is already 3 mill less than cap and bring back a haul

But somehow they are not equal value.

Carolina can keep all their players and move along.
