We didn’t need this bump to understand that Ovechkin has put some distance between himself and Stamkos.

That said, mocking Stamkos for scoring 30+ goals at age 34 is brutally missing the point. Outside of the high-flying 80s and early 90s, not a lot of guys have been 30 goal scorers in their mid 30s. Ovechkin happens to be one of them, we all get that, but Stamkos is still in rare territory and possibly the most underrated player of the past 50 years.

3rd in goals since the lockout with a lot fewer GP than the other guys who are high on that list. Next year he should finish 6th in goals since 1993 — the guys ahead of him being Ovechkin, Jagr, Iginla, Selanne, Crosby and each of them having large GP leads.

Among players with 1000+ games and 400+ goals, the only ones who scored goals at a faster rate were Gretzky, Ovechkin, Bobby and Brett Hull, Esposito, and Dionne. Stamkos’ rate will likely go down a little as he ages, but still, he is an all-time elite goal scorer who isn’t that far behind Ovechkin even today.

Always been a big Stamps fan, so I'm a tad biased.
OV won me over though. His endurance is off the charts!

In their primes for a Cup run ? Stamps by a nose.

Stamkos from 09-10 season until now has a GPG of 0.55. Ovi has 0.585.

Ovi has been healthy. Stamkos has battled blood clot, broken leg and more. He also was a playmaker one season to Kucherov.

I'm big Ovi fan, but would Stamkos match him if he had healthy career like Ovi? Stamkos was seen as new best goalscorer in league when Ovi fell off in '10-11 and even scored 60. But a few seasons later after he suffered some brutal injuries. Ovi then coincidentally got back on his game.
I think he may have been able to match, at full capacity he's awesome. His elite talent has been a bit forgotten.

To me that's the thing though about Ovechkin - elite, elite goal scorer season after season for a long career. It's incredibly hard to score goals and it's extremely important and he scored the most goals over a season nine times - nine Rocket Richard trophies. It boggles the mind.

It can and has been endlessly discussed who the best goal scorer is around here (including approximately 10,000 posts explaining why Mike Bossy is the purest sniper / goal scorer of all time).

So, I'm not engaging in that, just making the point that what makes Ovie truly standing out is precisely seemingly endless super high level consistency (thanks to talent, luck and determination etc. etc.) .
