The Quiet Corner
First winter in a long time I didn't walk whenever the track was cleared. Last 2 winters the cold has really bothered me even with wearing cold weather clothing. Definitely put on a few pounds to my annoyance but not surprise.

Now that the weather is getting milder I'll be starting up soon, maybe this weekend if skies are clear.

Unfortunately she has tried/won't fast

she starts to shake when she skips a meal

I know it is way late to comment on this, but I was diagnosed with mild type 2 diabetes around Thanksgiving (nice surprise, I know). I, literally, followed the diet from a standard Eli Lilly (pharma manufacturer) diabetes handbook on diabetes. I presume it is the same one as CDC would recommend. It cuts the sweets and makes you count the carbs. Makes you stick to a standard "one plate" meal. Over time you figure out what types of foods give you spikes in blood sugar - my cryptonite is pasta. I also exercise six times a week about 30-40 minutes at a time. As a result I dropped about 35 pounds of weight since then. It stabilized and lowered my blood sugar over the course of about 3 months into a healthy range and I can say for a fact my insulin sensitivity went up. Same foods that used to put me above normal range now do not have the same effect. I can't say it will work for anyone else, but worked for me.

Type 2 diabetes can be conquered by minimizing grains and sugars,as long as the Pancreas beta cells are not damaged. You did the smart thing, checking your BG after every food you eat. Carbs raise blood sugar longer and abuse the beta cells worse than pure sugar.

It's the only way to know, without generalizing, what foods cause elongated periods above 100. No other way to figure out "spikes" that I know of. High blood sugar causes oxidation, which is another word for aging, and all its wonder. It will work for everyone with Type 2,pre beta cell destruction.

Yep. I'm just joking. Took my time testing after each meal to figure out what works and what doesn't, but thought it was kind of obvious approach.

Started my attempt to get back in shape around last Xmas, used to be a gym rat but took a WFH job and let myself go years ago - a slow 4 year decline in health culminating in a "Is that really me?!" shock. Started at an unhealthy 195 lbs (5'7", 32 at the time). I've got 2 weeks of readings at or below 160 as of today, with significantly more muscle today than then - hell, I could barely trot half a mile when I started and now I run 5ks pretty easily 3x a week. I have new goals, but that weight & cardio target was my old one. It shouldn't have taken 14 months but at least I got here.

Definitely didn't over commit myself, had plenty of breaks, and many times of bad diet/drinking for extended periods, but it slowly came together. I can't believe how much worse I used to look - forget the fat, just the generally unhealthiness (I also quit smoking around the same time, and was nearly PPD for a few years at that point, another habit that slowly spiraled out of control). I knew this would be a combo of muscle build & weight loss so I did periodic pictures & waist measurement to track my progress instead of pure scale readings. I'd wager I'm down about 45 lbs of fat, maybe more. I went from a 39 to a 31 in waist (around the belly button).

Anyway, everyone else in my life is going the other direction at this point in our lives thanks to having kids and whatnot so I don't brag about it to any of them, instead subjecting you lot to it.

My new goal is to drop another 6 to 8 lbs of fat by June 1st, which will be hard, but I'm going to go without alcohol to help that along, plus it's warming up so I can run in the AM and lift at night. That'll get me down around 14% body fat and I'll have abs for the first time in 10 years for the summer. Let's see how that plan works out...

I wish I had done it much sooner, would have prevented so much. Keeping blood sugar under 100,is exactly the same as delaying and controlling aging.

Bumping this.

I got the Apple Watch about a week before the world shut down, and also picked up an Olympic bench, plates, bars, heavy bag etc for under $400 on Craigslist.

The watch has definitely added layers of accountability.

I’m expending about 3,100 calories per day and consuming about 2,500. Averaging 17 miles per week running.

Working in boxing workouts in the afternoons and brisk walks on rest days.

Avoiding staying up late and sleeping in. Already Seeing results after about a month of monitoring.

Struggling with stress eating. Guess I'll have to ramp up the walk, instead of 1 mile maybe do a mile and a third (track is one third of a mile). Have to be careful or my plantar fasciitis will kick up especially after a winter of not walking.

Almost 6 weeks after breaking him hip I’m starting to lift again. I started light last week and ramped it up a little this week. It feels great to get some exercise again, especially with the quarantine and isolation. I’m loving my powerblock weights right now, with those and a bench I can get a good workout from home.

I've decided to stop drinking for the extent of this quarentine to help get me to my May 1st goal, so far haven't drank since 03/20, which is (unfortunately) about as long as I've gone without a drink in a long time. It's not just the empty calories being cut, but I tend to get cravings for crap food the next day & my exercise suffers as well, so it's a 3 for 1. If only it would warm up a bit I can stick with running, right now its' lifting/core in the PM and an alternation of yoga or exercise bike in the AM; it adds up to about 75-90 minutes of exercise each day plus about 45 minutes of walking the dog. Figure I'm expending around 2500-2600 calories a day and eating about 2000 so I should be able to drop 4 lbs by May 1st if I stay consistent.

Figure if I'm stuck inside all the time I might as well try to develop some good habits.

During quarantine, I decided to rededicate myself to running.

I read that Jake Gyllenhaal ran 8 miles per day every day for 4 months while training for Southpaw, and thought that sounded like a pretty interesting challenge.

I’m at 79 consecutive days.

Been eating a lot of pizzas to compensate.

I am glad i built my own small gym during the years.

It's more like a pile of equipment really:

60 lbs weighted vest - this thing is the best, everything from weighted dips, push ups, puls to squats, walking lunges and so on

45 lbs plate - shoulders, overhead squat etc

couple of dumbbells

parallettes & pull up bar

That's about it, don't really need more.

Im in the same-ish boat. Bought my house just over three years ago now. Leading up to this year I had been adding gym equipment to the basement since we moved in. Really glad I did that!

Diet hasn't been the best during this pandemic but Im hitting numbers in weight lifting that I never have before.

That and a looooot of golf this year. Which normally I would only get out once or twice per year.

Keeping in good health + aging is tricky and requires planning/strategy

After a two week vacation , got off the healthy bandwagon.... gained like 10 pounds, in a snap of a finger

I tried quickly to reverse this by running 5k again, every other day. And instead it blasted by knees after like 3 sessions. I wasn't even running very fast/more like jogging. My adrenals were burnt out (can't say for sure) but too fatigued to do anything the next day.

So trying to get back into shape at an older age can be a real bummer. Some folks with good genetics can recover well. So they can just keep raising up the intensity, getting themselves in great shape sooner than later

Recently I started to utilize my precor elliptical (non moving arm version) for lower body and concept 2 skierg for upper body. About 35 minutes total 6 times a week. And it is working without draining me out. I've lost a few pounds. Sugar cravings have also dropped (likely due to better insulin sensitivity). Sleeping much quicker and deeper also.

I was planning to lay off beer and other treats during the NHL playoffs, but who am I kidding?? I will just enjoy food and also working it off before bed.

Suffered my first major “failure” with regards to fitness.

I’d completed the marathon in Manchester the last three years and set out to try and hit a personal record yesterday.

Instead, I shit the bed at mile 23 and DNF.

After a day of feeling sorry for myself, I’m more determined than ever to get back at it.
