I agree that people claiming to know better are silly, the fact remains that part of Chia's job is to draft and develop the best player.

How many GMs get villified for "reaching" on a player when the consensus was available?

The right pick isn't always the right pick. All GMs miss from time to time, but the impact increases exponentially the higher the missed pick is.

Why do you behave like a child instead of just accepting valid criticism of your team's GM? And congrats you brought up trades that a GM who hasn't been with the organization in 5 years made.

It was another attempt to strengthen our defense after the failed Reinhart trade.
Every crappy move Chia made for defense was out of urgency because McDavid was drafted and our defense was a tire fire thanks to the previous 10 years of incompetency.
yeah but we had a lot of shiny assets!
I don't get how we lost with such a great core of Hall, RNH, Eberle, Schultz, Klefbom

Chia has mostly been a dumpster fire, but this pick was not a bad one. At the time was BPA, his current struggles don't change that.

I don't know about losing every trade but the man is an unstoppable moron. I wonder how much patience Edmonton ownership has at this point

Maroon, Talbot, Kassian were all good trades.

We got bad value for Hall, but we would be beyond trash without him. Wish we could've gotten Larsson + but that's life.

Rest is bad.

That's just breath-taking. It was like he was destroying NYI on purpose.

Desharnais helped us win a series. A win of a trade even for that one game.

Not to mention the Benning and Caggiula signings.

He traded Eberle for nothing. Yakupov for nothing. Hall who was almost PPG for a top 4D. Signed Lucic to 6M a year. Barzal for Reinhart.

The only moves that he made that look were ‘solid’ would be picking up waiver players and putting them with McDavid to make them appear to have more value. The Talbot trade is the one good move I remember in his tenure as GM.

I can’t remember the last time a GM arguably lost every move he’s made as GM. I can’t see him getting another NHL job for a while if he’s fired. He lucked into McDavid, and is surrounding him with borderline NHLers and signing them to retirement contracts.

His name was Mike Milbury.

Based off of the below analysis I would say his W/L/T record in 4/4/10 but I still do believe that lots of those lost trades need to be done to create a more complete team. There were to many deficiencies with the old Oilers.

* This was a change of scenery trade if anything else. Yakupov did nothing is St Louis and was a healthy scratch for most of the year. St Louis decided not to qualify him and he signed with Colorado, has had a decent year so far but Yakupov has been streaky in the past so this could change.

* Positional trade - we needed to trade for a defenseman and everyone in the league new we were in dire need of one. No matter what we were going to loss the trade. I loved Hall as an Oiler but this is a trade I probably would do again because of need.... we were not going to get a young top 4 defenseman at the cap hit Larsson has without giving up what we did... I think Eberle for Larsson would have been better but I dont think the Devils bite on that.

Interesting post - but I wouldn't consider Talbot a win for Chiarelli. If anything it has to be even. The Rangers didn't need Talbot so trading him gave them a bunch of basically free assets.

Now you are really reaching.
73 games and 42 wins last year was solely due to our crazy good defense?
Oilers would not have picked squat with the 57 (Jonas Siegenthaler) , 79 (Sergei Zborovskiy) and 184 (Adam Huska) picks.

Starting goalie = Bunch of 1% maybes

some trades he was destined to be on the losing end, like the Taylor hall trade and the eberle, just like Benning no matter what happens he was going to be on the losing end of the Kesler, trade, the most he could have done was to get the most of a kegler trade. Personally It thought, he could have gotten a little more for the hall and eberle trade. but I don't think he is the worst trading gm in the league.

getting a starting goalie who tied for the most wins last year isn't a win?

Sorry, but this is classic HF "what have you done lately" confirmation bias.

We had 82 games last year where our team took a major leap forward. The major difference between our team was Hall for Larsson. Hall played poorly in NJ last year and Larsson anchored our top pairing to a playoff birth.

Every analyst had to eat crow. So did many of you.

Now we have 24 games of Hall doing well and Larsson being largely unnoticeable (good or bad) and our record stinks (mostly due to goaltending and finish... note we are top 10 in shots for/game and top 10 in least shots against/game.

And here you all are, largely to bash the guy for Hall for Larsson.

It's tiresome
