I remembered watching her floor routine in the prelims.
She didn't just go out of bounds on the mat (as would be common in compeition) but off the mat completely.
Yeah. things like that. I mean we can argue all day long if they should have let her go to the Olympics (she was having mistakes all year long), - and there is footage of her at the Trials saying that she doesn't feel really well, and she pushed through it anyway. but lets be real. If she were like not Simone Biles, all those mistakes would have pegged her a risk and she
wouldn't have made the Olympic Team - but since she's Biles, people (probably including her), thought she would have shaken it off. She didn't, and her body finally said - yeah. enough,
listen to me.
I said else where, part of the problem is probably because Simone herself flat out said she was prepared to retire last year and then didn't because she felt that she would come back and be the face of change for USA Gymnastics in regards to what happened to the hundreds of girls who were sexually abused because of Nassar and if they had an active person from that time they couldn't sweep it under the rug - which admirable, but if you came back because of being an advocate - not for the love of sport and all that jazz is her mind really in it? I don't know. Simone also admitted that this was the first time ever she competed without her parents being around. she's completely isolated (and she's extremely extroverted) so there is a lot of things that could compound panic attacks that she couldn't just push it away.
I said yesterday (because some of the quotes made it sound like it was more of a "ehh, don't feel like it or something") that Khorkina or other old school gymnasts would walk on broken glass if they simply felt "yucky." vs just walk off the floor. But
that is completely different from having what is known as the "twisties" where your body just adds twists (or
untwists) when it's not supposed to. It's extremely dangerous, it takes a lot to re-train the body and doing it in the middle of an Olympic competition is pretty much not advisable.
You can argue her being all stressed about being the face of the Olympics, and all the expectations (so then you know don't stitch GOATS on your Leos for one). and hindsight you could argue that they (or her team, or her) should have been smarter, seen the signs and pull her off the team, but you wouldn't do that if McDavid or Crosby was having a horrendous season - you'd still put them on Team Canada, and expect them to shake out of the yuckies,. But if Hockey had a version of the twisties where their actual life could be in dangerous. damn straight i'd expect Team Canada to pull them out of competition.
