Developing scoring wing who displays ability to make plays in high gear. Has a quick jump and although not a real lateral player, weaves well in traffic. Reads coverages and gets open. Plays strong on the puck when pressured, and can be clever when called upon to be. He is more a finisher than set up guy, and is very disciplined to get back in transition and back check for pucks. At this juncture isn't strong enough to dominate, but when he is, he may be good pro up & down North-South skater with ability to pot some goals and provide opportunistic scoring cahnces on the attack.

A strong skating player with good finishing ability. Possler has a quick release and is overall quite gifted offensively. Hockey sense is decent, puck skills quite good.

Possler is a strong skating finisher. He’s a good skater who shows explosiveness in his first few steps which helps him stir things out of nothing while challenging the defenseman wide. He has good straight-line speed, turns well and very fluid on his skates. He’s good with the puck on his stick and controls it well at high speed and in tight areas. He’s not an electrifying dangler but is a very smart player in many ways and does many clever small things with the puck. He sees the ice well and has some decent creativity but is far more a natural goal scorer than a playmaker. Possler possesses a lethal shot and gets it off quickly and often. He gets his shot released while skating at full speed and has a sneaky hidden release point that doesn’t compromise accuracy or velocity on wristers. He’s not really a big slapshot guy at all. He’s not overly physical but uses his body position well. Defensively, he is more of a read-and-react kind of player, likes to sit back and pounce on an opportunity to force a turnover with the element of surprise or good stick-work. He comes back and provides a good moving outlet for his defense and is willing to get into lanes and even block shots. He can play both centre as well as the wing but his pro potential translates better as a goal scoring winger.

Possler is a quick sniper who moved up and down between MODO’s U20 squad and their men’s team. He has a real nose for the net, and is a threat to score from the slot on a consistent basis. The first thing you notice about Possler’s game is his offensive abilities. He is very quick off the rush and shows good poise with the puck on his stick. He has above average stick handling abilities, and while he may not overwhelm any defender with his hands, he is able to protect the puck quite well and keep control of it easily as he moves with speed. Possler’s best asset is his shooting ability. He has a very good release to his shots, and is also able to place them quite accurately. He is not afraid to crash the net, and show some toughness and be willing to mix it up with opposing defensemen. The weakness to Possler’s game is his defensive abilities. There are times when he floats around the ice without the puck, and will need to really improve on playing with more intensity in his own end. He certainly has the offensive tools to be a successful pro, but if he cannot be trusted by his coaches in the defensive zone, he will not have the opportunity to show off his skills in the offensive zone.

We have a major sleeper alert here with the young opprtunistic producer. Possler is an average-sized winger with a well-above average release. More of a finisher than a set-up man, the goal-scoring Swede first popped on the radar with an excellent showing at the 2012 U18s, where he used good speed, hands, and an ability to capitalize off the rush to collect eight points in seven games. He's a right place/right time type of player who buries rebounds as well. Heading into the season, I felt that Possler would garner late-first, early-second round consideration. Really solid potential is in play for a team needing scoring from its natural wings.

Wonder if this was a recommendation from the Swedish eyes and ears we had helping us last year. Forget his name... the one who recommended Ullmark.

Interesting pick. If Detroit wanted him, that's a good thing. There's no one better than Detroit at pulling fantastic Europeans out of the draft late.

Quotable: “A player we liked last season who fell off the radar a bit this year. Our scout Charles An had him high on his list last season. He really impressed me last year at the U18 in the Czech Republic.” - Mark Edwards

Four year development rights for Buffalo on this one too -- this is another long-roping move.

Smart and solid two-way winger with a quick release and a real nose for the net. Was highly touted after his impressive U18 WJC one year ago but has fallen off the radar this year, despite having a perfectly fine season in swedish junior.

Go-to-guy on the penalty kill and overall good work ethic. Above-average hands and playmaking ability, but is not really a flashy player.

Skating lacks high-end seperation speed and shiftiness, but his game is more about making smart plays and being in the right position at the right time.

He's one of 14 forwards on the Modo SHL team and will try to crack the starting lineup this fall. His chances to do so should be at least decent, and if not I expect him to get loaned to a club in the SHL2.

I do think that he's got some NHL potential. I could see him eventually becoming like a solid third-liner who occasionally contribrutes offensively, but there's (as always) just so much that could get in his way.

Becoming a regular on the MODO SHL team next season would at least be a very good first step.

HP's take, #88:
Early in the year, HP talked of Possler as first-round pick (#30) and wrote:
Gustav Possler – Forward, Modo Jr, Sweden

Gustav Possler was not high on anyone’s prospect list a year ago, but a strong performance at the World Under-18 Championship has helped raise his stock. He scored 4 goals and 4 assists in 6 games, leading Sweden to a silver medal at the event.

In the latest HockeyProspect.com rankings, Possler is ranked 30th, and for good reason. He has a very high hockey IQ and great hands around the net.

“Possler is a pure goal scorer and has a deceptive release,†said Hockey Prospect scout Charles An. “He has the ability to find open areas in coverage that many players don’t have.â€

Possler, who turns 18 on Remembrance Day, is continuing his point-per-game pace from last season. He has 9 goals and 7 assists through his first 12 games this year.

In 2011/12, he scored 40 points, including 23 goals, in 37 regular season games. He also played two games with the Modo men’s team, where he scored 1 goal.
“He still has some work to do in the defensive zone, but his offensive abilities cannot be ignored and can translate well in the NHL level,†added An.

Sounds like he was on his way to becoming a 2nd round pick until he stopped developing completely last year.

For the most part Buffalo has had terrible luck with Swedish skaters and having them develop so this should be an interesting pick to keep an eye on.

Note: OP Addition

The OP's been fully edited and updated, including two YouTube clips of goals.

Possler scored four goals and four assists in six games at the 2012 U18 World Championship, but unfortunately the best clip of him in that tourney is embedded below. He is #20 and gets the primary assist on de la Rose's goal to start the highlight.

So he's pretty much a 3rd round caliber prospect we got in the 5th... Excellent. I find it interesting we took more Euros then Canadians.

One upside is that the new CBA allows for a 4-year rights window on European drafted picks now. They basically can stash him in Sweden until he's 22 to see how he rounds out his game.

Saw the USA-Sweden game in Placid yesterday. Very entertaining, physical game. I was the only person out of about 100 rooting for the Swedes. Possler played first line and first PP with Collberg and Wennberg. Nothing stood out too much, but he was solid. That hit with less than a minute left in the game got a rise out of the crowd. Some nice stick lifts and possession plays on the PP. Found himself involved in a number of physical situations, including a jumping 360 to absorb a triple team hit at center ice. He'll be a fun follow in the years to come, especially if he can add some bulk.

On a side note, I'm not overly impressed by Compher. He looks strange on his skates and in his equipment, and his frame looks rather slight. Not sure he'll ever carry more than 185 unless he gets adopted by the Wolverine football team. Seems like a Roy/Kaleta hybrid that may get stuck in the middle. The player Montreal selected with the pick prior, Jacob De La Rose, was far more impressive physically and skill-wise. Just my two cents.
