It's very reasonable to have a preference for Lemieux over Gretzky

And it's not about "what ifs" as so many like to say

Simply put, some people feel that at their best Lemieux was better

It is everyones god given right to be wrong...
Saying Lemieux> Gretzky is not some alien concept. Usually in a poll Gretzky will win 70% to 30%. 30% is still a sizeable margin and when they played in the 80’s and 90’s they were looked upon very close.

Tough call, but I'd go with Pittsburgh.

I think that Lemieux has more tools than Gretzky, even tho Gretzky was a goddamn machine and he's the best player ever,
McDavid is still too young to be compared to the greatness of Crosby,
Malkin vs Messier... I don't know. Malkin is probably better, but Messier was going all out every time. Plus, he could elbow someone in half.

A 23 year old Lemieux had 34 more goals and the same amount of assists in less games than a perfectly healthy 27/28 year old Gretzky who was physically protected throughout his NHL career.

The difference between Lemieux and Gretzky was Coffey. As 88-89 showed. Even in 87-88 if both played a full season
Gretzky 186
Lemieux 172

This is Lemieux on the awful 88 Pena and Gretzky on the dynasty oilers. Only 14 more points?

Sorry but what does this even mean?

I think hes trying to say for that season? Couldn't be career, because he was no where close at 23.

A 23 year old Lemieux was no where near a 23 year old Gretzky though.

I'm surprised Coffey wasnt voted in on those trash all-time best player polls that were going around. Coffey was the essential cog for 99 to do well...who knew.

Coffey was worth 14 points. What a juggernaut

Lemieux is pretty much on par or better than Gretzky.

How? When did Mario Lemieux ever do anything better than Wayne Gretzky?

#66 NHL records regular season - 5, NHL playoff records - 4

#99 NHL records regular season - 40, NHL playoff records - 15

Seems like "on par or better" may not quite be correct.

Mario had 4 seasons over 160 points. Gretzky had 9. The reason I chose 160 over say 170 is to give Lemieux every advantage possible. If I raise the bar to 170 Mario had 1. Gretzky 6. [mod] Gretzky was better at his peak and had a better career. This foolishness neads to stop.

Gretzky was a lot tougher too, Mario cried every time he got touched. Gretzky had enforcers on his side but when he was slammed he still wasn’t a bitch like Lemieux. Lemieux cried to the refs and media time, that’s why a lot of people didn’t like Crosby when he first came in. He lived in his basement and whined just as much as his mentor.

No response! Everyone’s on you tube trying to find one instance of Lemieux being tough.
