Grab's made a ton of sense at the time. High speed goal scoring wing who could kill penalties? I thought it was a slam dunk at the time.

Liked it much better then the Maroon deal.

I've gone complete reversal on that. But I could certainly foresee Grab's scoring some big goals in the playoffs.

Yeah agreed, hard to argue that it wasn't a good deal at that snapshot in time.

It still may be and overall big trade, specifically if he starts converting in the PO. I also still think his impact on PK is still huge, even if he isn't potting SHG's, the amount of extra pressure the opposition PP pointmen have to deal with each game is pretty hard to quantify, but you can say it will impact how they play against us, and that threat alone maybe worth the rental price if we go far enough.

The PK was already good before this trade happened.

As I see it, the whole defence of this trade relies on the short-term effects. Sure, if you don't care about long-term effects, it's a good trade (since Rykov and 2nd rounder have zero impact for now) but I'd rather see patient and rational building of the team than going aggressively for the rentals, while we aren't even top 10 team.

No. Rykov and the 2nd rounder will have zero impact...PERIOD.

There is no "To Be Continued" here.

This was absolutely(despite Grabner's impact being just okay at the moment) a solid trade.

The worst trade by Shero as NJD GM?

My personal ranking:
L - logic - how much the trade made sense at the time it was made
H - hindsight - how it turned out
T - total

1) Hall trade (L10/H10/T20)
2) Palmieri trade (L8/H10/T18)
3) Vatanen trade (L8/H9/T18)
4) Johansson trade (L8/H4/T12)
5) Mueller trade (L3/H7/T10)
6) Grabner trade (L1/H2/T3)

Wedgewood and Quincey deals weren't significant enough, pick swap with Ottawa can't be judged using "hindsight" ranking so there's that.

Didn't you forget the Beau Bennett trade?

Thing is: Shero was showing his team that he wants to win now and believes in the squad. Not in a way that it's good enough as it is, but more that he is willing to give up a little bit of the future for present success. I am sure this helps guys like Hall to play better and it isn't really all that important that Grabner scores like he did with the Rangers. Besides, we're in the Playoffs, so Shero was right to make the deal. It's that easy.

He hasn’t been good, but you take a gamble and you try and make the team better. You let your team know that you’re (Shero) doing the job to get the team into the playoffs and showing you have the confidence in them to pull it off. It was an excellent move, but he’s just not turning out to be great. It’s still a small sample size, maybe he scores 6 or 7 points in 5 games to tilt the numbers out if we had more games. Maybe he does it in the playoffs? Who knows? And it also kept Hayes and even Stafford out of here too, as was already mentioned.

What's not shown is his presence and impact(without the shg scored) on the PK.

Plus, him playing means Hayes and Stafford(last night notwithstanding) ISN'T playing.

I think the above two make the trade worth it, despite him being a streaky player. Would rather have HIM on the ice than Stafford or Friggin' Hayes.

Grabner has disappointed but Maroon has been every good.

We have still got a good return on trading a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

I still like Grabner's game when he is not scoring. He is a monster on PK.

NYI fan here.

I agree with your first sentence. It’s important to reward your team when they earn it, and I think in the Devils’ case, they earned it.

I think it helps keep your team motivated when your manager recognizes your success and rewards it. Shero was smart about it and didn’t even use a 1st.

I’m sure guys like Bratt and Wood are watching Grabner and taking bits away from his game.

His PK prowess should help in the playoffs, and hopefully Maroon just plays his game (which is basically what Jimmy Hayes wishes he could be/Stafford has been washed up for years).

Good luck in the playoffs folks. My GF recently accepted a job in North Jersey from down in Florida and is relocating up to the area. With the news that the NYI owners are keeping Snow/Weight, I may just end up converting to a Devils fan.

I mean, can you imagine if Shero had that 4 hour dinner or whatever with Hall and Hall comes back and scores 93 points, and the deadline comes and goes and Shero just shrugs his shoulders?

The trade hasn't worked so far, I wasn't a fan of it when it was announced, but now I understand it much better. You ask your best player for more and he delivers in spades, you don't leave him hanging when the team is fighting to make the postseason.

Not to mention Grabner can turn it on in the playoffs

The price alone was worth a playoff ticket, even if Grabner didnt come this way. So the fact that we got him too is icing on top

Is there a source on that beyond pure speculation? Our fans only started saying that after we traded him.

**

I'm basically keeping my mouth shut on this trade because I really liked Rykov, and I really like the second round.

I think it's OK to think a day before the Rykov deal 'I sure hope NJ signs him, he is going to be good' and then after the deal say 'I don't think the Devils were confident in their chances of signing Rykov'. It doesn't change his ability as a player - he's still a very good prospect, medium ceiling but high floor, and I expect to see him in a Rangers uniform someday. It's just that as an organization, the Devils were always going to claim in public that they are hopeful to sign a guy like Rykov, but that's not a guarantee that they could've made it happen. They did the same with Kerfoot and he went elsewhere.

Great post. It was a great psychological move regardless of grabners failure.

I’d love to see the reaction around here if the rangers made a trade that bombed and their fans said it was ok because it was a great psychological move.

the bottom line is that so far, the trade hasn’t worked out. at all. you can’t win em all. to justify it as a psychological win or a good trade because it keeps hayes out (as if we don’t have players in Binghamton we couldn’t have called up to make a grabber-like impact) is kinda embarrassing

If he gets some key goals that help us win the series, the trade was well worth it. He's been disappointing, but he has been getting his chances. He's always been a guy that has trouble converting on his breakaways, but he's failed on like all of them with us. A few big goals against Tampa and I'll forgive him. On paper Shero made a fair trade, I can't blast him because Grabner has been snakebitten.

There wouldn't be a reaction (except from a select few panicking that the Rangers are getting better).

My point stands: saying the trade "made no sense" is just not being truthful and trying to stir the pot. The trade absolutely made sense.

i don't know about that. like i said, it was fair value-wise, but given our abundance of LW's, i can't say that it made sense. thankfully, we didn't give up that much for him so it's not a big deal
