I saw Latta get into a fight vs. Hope in Oshawa. He didn't get much ice time

Kitchener was eliminated last night. Tobias Rieder ended up with 13+14 27 in 16 games played. Leads the OHL in playoff points.

Mathias Niederberger (Barrie Colts) was eliminated last round, but is top 3 in GAA in the playoffs. 13 games 2.34 GAA 0.933 sv%

Niagara IceDogs and Tom Kühnhackl 5+4 9 in 14 games are still in the playoffs. They could be heading to the OHL finals soon.

In the WHL, Portland is still alive with Marcel Noebels 4+12 16 in 14 games.

Finally in the QMJHL, Halfax is still alive with Konrad Abeltshauser 4+11 15 in 13 games.

Do you guys have any infos on goaltender Marvin Cüpper? He's just been drafted by the Shawinigan Cataractes of the QMJHL. GM Martin Mondou said he could be our #1 goaltender so I figure he must be good.

A year ago, he was considered as a very good goalie prospect by German standards. I thought he could follow in the footsteps of guys like Grubauer or Niederberger. This last season however was not as good as many expected. There are some younger goalies who may have passed him by. His play was not really bad, but inconsistent and he didn't really seem to improve much compared to the previous season.
I'd say he has the talent, but he has a lot of work to do. Maybe a change of scenery will do him some good.
Could he challange for a number 1 spot in Shawinigan? Yes I think so. Would I bet on it? No.

How is Draisaitl compared to other German "big" prospects such as Kuhnhackl, Rieder, Noebels ? Is he better, equal, worse ?

noebels was never considered a "big" prospect. he just seems to develop well.

draisaitl is considered to be an elite prospect for german standards. so among the kuhnhackl/rieder group.
really a very talented guy.

Definitely a kid to keep an eye on. Still a bit of a slower, choppier skater, but big and rangy. Good eye, scorers touch.

Where's Kühnhackl? I couldn't find him on the OHL homepage... It seems that it got a bit quiet about Tom since that hit on Ryan Murphy.

He'll be playing with WB/Scranton in the AHL this year. He's graduated from the CHL to the pro ranks.

As Smitty pointed out he is going to play in the pros this year.
I will probably add the German players in the AHL like Kühnhackl, Noebels, Grubauer, etc. once their season starts.
I am wondering if any of them might end up in the ECHL because of the lockout.

Look forward to following this throughout, especially if the AHLers are added to the list.

There should of course be a trickle-down effect due to the lockout.

I have to think that Kuhnhackl will be in the AHL in some capacity. At the moment, he remains one of Pittsburgh's most intriguing offensive prospects and I think they'll want to see what he can do at that level, especially if there's some interesting talent that he'd otherwise not get to play with at this point without the lockout.

I think all three of them will end up in the AHL. Abeltshauser should have been assigned to the AHL if this was a regular season, however I think in order to keep him away from the ECHL, San Jose sent him back to the Q. I'd be shocked if any of the others see any time in the ECHL. Noebels should have no problem cracking a terrible Adirondack team, Kuhnhackl is one of Pittsburgh's top forward prospects and Grubauer will be playing a bigger role for Hershey this year.

Holzer would have cracked the Leafs, but he'll be back in the AHL until (if?) the NHL season starts. Krueger will be playing a top 4 role with Charlotte.

With Mueller moving to Sweden, are there any other German prospects in the AHL this year?

As you can see, I added more than just the guys from the AHL.
I hope you guys don't mind that I also added some players from the DNL.
I'll admit I picked some of the guys in the DNL just based on their numbers but in those cases I found the numbers very intriguing. We'll see if any of them actually turn out to be any good.

Since this has become somewhat bigger than initially planned, do you think I should start a new thread or should I just keep posting regular updates in this thread?

No, I believe Grubauer, Holzer, Krueger, Kühnhackl and Noebels are the only ones.

And thank you for the insight regarding the quality of the AHL-Teams and the potential roles of the German players. I have followed that league very little in the past. I only kept tabs on the Marlies because of Holzer and Mueller.

obernesser made the opening roster. :yo:

lehr's team didn't announce it yet, i think. they have time until tomorrow. but as far as i know lehr is already in contract talks with a german team anyway.

Of the DNL boys named above, there are some interesting prospects for the upcoming draft, namely Eisenschmid and Gollenbeck. A few of the others were draft-eligible last year and certainly could be interesting in the eyes of the NHL IF they could have monster, monster years. Of course, one or more would have to have an awestriking WJC in Ufa much like Niederreiter had in his draft year.

Also, Tuomie and Kammerer are, I believe, candidates for the 2014 draft. I keep forgetting what exactly the cut-off date is, but both will be 17 as of the 13 draft and Tuomie won't be 18 until the following September. Goaltender Proske would even be a year thereafter, I believe. If he has a strong DNL year - something he's started in a fine manner - expect him to be on a short list of players heading to the CHL as soon as next season.
