Mainz needs to keep scoring some big points right now though, as their final four opponents will be Bayern (1.), Frankfurt (4.), Dortmund (5.), Wolfsburg (3.). Hertha likewise Schalke (18.), Bielefeld (17.), Köln (14.), Hoffenheim (11.).

Mainz needs to keep scoring some big points right now though, as their final four opponents will be Bayern (1.), Frankfurt (4.), Dortmund (5.), Wolfsburg (3.). Hertha likewise Schalke (18.), Bielefeld (17.), Köln (14.), Hoffenheim (11.).

I somehow feel like Hertha is up for choking away some of those points but that's brutal for Mainz.

Well it wouldn't really be a 'choke' given that as the table position indicates they aren't any better really than those teams. They desperately need to sweep those games vs their direct competition but it's by no means a given or even highly likely scenario.

Honestly the amazing thing is that we talk so much about Schalke's amazingly bad season but Hertha, Bielefeld, Mainz and Cologne are all playing seasons that would be almost certain to condemn them to relegation by a significant margin in a regular year as well. They're all on 'pace' for 30 or less points.

That's not quite right. It's 2 wins out of the last 8. And really 3 of the losses in that stretch came in other competitions. Their BuLi form is LWLDDW over the last 6. Not great, but they're still in 6th place and only 4 points back from a CL spot.

I think they like Bosz and his style, know a lot of the players are volatile in their form, and are thus reluctant to make a mid-season change given that it's unlikely anyone great is available to take over now anyway.

They have a very unequal schedule distribution. The schedule makers should've done a better job with that. They play 5 of the 6 above them their next five games, and face 4 of the current top 5 their last 4 games.

I think if they don't qualify for the Champions League this year they'll fire Bosz, but firing a coach midseason doesn't always have great results. Who are you going to sign to replace that coach? Probably a 38 year old whose never coached at a high level that'll bring even worse results than the coach you fired.

Yup I missed the Bmon game. Still pretty horrific. 3 wins in 13 games in the league.
