Somebody who refuses to buy into the ridiculous hate of various people who have been involved with the Canucks that permeates this board. If Willie were REALLY as bad as everybody here says he is he wouldn't be once again coaching in the NHL, nor would he have got his gig with Hockey Canada. If Gudbranson REALLY is "the worst defenseman in the NHL" JB wouldn't have got calls for him at the deadline and wouldn't have been able to trade him for any sort of usable asset. If Gagner REALLY wasn't good enough to play on our NHL roster then Edmonton wouldn't have traded for him and immediately inserted him into THEIR NHL lineup. If Nilsson REALLY was a "trash backup" be wouldn't have won the WHC (and best goalie award) nor would he have been able to get traded to the worst team in hockey and go on a tear. Such talk is completely idiotic, the ravings of lunatics who are so frustrated by their team's lack of success that they can feel only pure hatred for the objects of their ire and who can find absolutely no value in them. Their opinions are worthless. In before some bozo says "but all the GM's in the NHL are idiots..."

Man, you've assembled a whole lot of examples of the "appeal to authority" fallacy.

Goaltending was elite. Defence was decent considering Vegas kept coming in waves. The weakest link were the forwards; absolutely no jump, so soft and slow. It was men against boys, depressing to watch.

#FireBenning is trending and some of them are being sent to Aquaman.

People who have Twitter should be - repeatedly - asking Fredo how comfortable he is having someone who has spent $350 million so badly over the past 5 years on such terrible pro scouting and talent evaluation controlling the $30 million in cap space this summer while trying to save his job.

It was like a WHL team VS an NHL all-star team. 20 shots VS 50 shots is really all you need to know. How many high quality scoring chances did the Canucks even have? 2? One for Pettersson and one for Goldy? That's all I remember. Even if they had scored on both they would have lost, never mind that Fleury robbed them blind.

Vegas could literally have played a Pee-Wee house league goalie in that game and still won. The shot counters were extremely generous and several of our shots were either headed wide or muffin dump-ins.

Remember when Pastor said the offence isn’t a problem? And everyone said it wasn’t sustainable?

Good times
I don't because I don't really pay attention to his babble.

No, Willie embarrassed himself by rolling 1-2-3-4 and conceding last chance while handing Hartley all of his preferred matchups to shred us with.

That was the worst display of coaching in any major sport in modern history. I’m still in disbelief that it actually happened. He just completely abdicated his role and ran his bench the exact same way a parent coaching 6 year-olds would coach.

@Melvin is there a way to calculate what our expected GA would be if Markstrom was replaced with middle of the road goaltending?

Hockey reference calculates Goals Saved Above Average (GSAA), but it's important to note that Marky's overall save percentage is what is compared to league average save percentage.

Marky's amazing play especially since the start of December, and his overall importance to the team is not adequately reflected in his overall save percentage IMO.

Willie is a garbage coach, the 2015 series against Calgary was bizarre. The fact that he kept playing the Sbisa / Bieksa pairing was just appalling, the make a wish foundation kids that skate around before the games could have done better.

We should have never fired tortorella. He was right about everything.
He was right about everything except for the part where he was right about absolutely nothing at all.

Oh, except when he called David Booth a "weird dude". He was pretty spot on about that.

Yeah, no, I'd rather gouge my eyes out than even entertain the idea of Tortorella coaching one more game for us.

He's gassed. And losing Calder votes daily to Dahlin who is getting better. Not EP40's fault the team is so reliant on a rookie

The brutal part is, people (especially in the east) will remember the 2nd half of the season, all things being equal because it’s fresher in their memory. Sucks. Literally can’t have nice things here.

I'll just do the Orcatown summary:

Good: Markstrom and the weather

Bad: Everyone including management and the owners

I copied some orcatown quotes from 10 other games. You should barely be able to tell that they aren't for this one

Good

Markstrom - outstanding

Others

Granlund - simply not good enough. Had a few spurts but eliminated easily during most of the run of the play.

Boeser - real bad defensively and was not good on the PP. Shooting when he should be looking for better options. Also made some blind passes that screwed up PP chances. Question here is how much do you pay him going ahead. Stats aren't bad but some aspects of his game leave much to be desired. Also without Pettersson where is he at. Likely the Dim One will overpay

Stecher - one guy giving a full effort. Just wish he had a semblance of offensive upside

Hutton - brutal beginning to the game. Got standing around watching and not moving his feet. Looked gassed all game after being over played on the road trip. Knocked the puck stupidly into his own net, made horrible pinches and gapped miserably at his blue line. You do wonder if Hutton really has it at this level. Sometimes you see real progress and than at others slips back into incompetence.

Horvat - goal scoring has just dried up. Looking now more like the second line player he was predicted to be.

Motte - how did he miss the chance in the second. Example of his lack of good stick around the net and elsewhere. Like how he forces the play but his stick work is very sub-par

Eriksson - total no-show. Skating issues completely exposed by a quick Carolina team. Canucks will never be a highly competitive team as long as they are carrying trash like him.

Goldobin - can't seem to bear down on chances. Maybe pressing but he needs to get over that. Question whether he has anything like upper end speed and is clearly weak on the puck. Maybe a question of get what you can for this player

Levio - showed no ability to convert chances provided. Frustrating in this game

Everybody focuses on the forwards, and granted in this game none of them looked good.

But the root of the Canucks problems starts and at times ends with the blueline. They can't win puck battles; their zone exits are the worst in the NHL; and they generate next to nothing offensively. There's a reason why they come out in the first periods and get buried alive in the first 10 minutes.

Look around the league at the teams that are successful. They've got d-man who are skilled at zone exits; can join the rush; can score off the cycle; and get back when the other teams transition the puck.

This Canuck blueline has been exposed every which way you can get exposed on this trip. Beaten by guys coming out of the penalty box; slow to react to uncovered guys in the slot and brutal d-zone turnovers. Can't win puck battles in their own zone to save their lives. Even Hutton and Stecher are wearing down. This was easily their worst three-game stretch of the season so far.

Jimbo is on record as saying he wants to 'fix' the blueline this off-season. He's a year late and a pound short. The time to have done something about this blueline was LAST season. Instead he brings the same group back and then goes out and pays inflated prices for three, third and fourth line grinders in Beagle, Schaller and Roussel.

Unfortunately, you can't win when the GM doesn't give you the tools you need to win.

Other than Markstrom,..Goldoblin seemed to be one player that had a pulse, and was actually trying in this game.
