Pretty disappointed going in with the forward situation.

D is probably the best we could do with losing hamilton. I watched his interview. He was NEVER going to stay and had zero attachment to Carolina. Don't make that mistake. The only thing that angers me about it is DW misleading us. Which he did. We were never close. And weren't going to be.

We need more forecheck. Trocheck aint gonna do it all. Svech needs to step the f*** up.

^^It's been a rough week on the emotional rollercoaster. I cried watching the NBA draft last night during the Terrence Clarke segment and after reading Calipari's post. The show was well done..the human interest videos in particular. The outfits were colorful. Nice seeing dreams come true.

Hope ESPN/Disney puts that much effort into some of the hockey coverage moving forward.

The Canes have made me cry plenty wo Espn...

Hopefully, in good ways? On the NBA draft show, the league posthumously "drafted" a young man who died in a car crash and honored his family. It was very well done.

What I meant re: ESPN/Disney is that the production of the entire event was night and day from the NHL one broadcast a week before. Putting the Zoom aspect aside, the clever human interest segments, the vibe, the staging and marketability of it all. They said that since it aired on ABC instead of ESPN, they wanted to make it more of a human interest type of celebration blended with some performance facts and figures and player attributes. Maybe they got lucky because they the kids drafted had very interesting backstories. I think something similar would be good for hockey. It was just for the first round.

IDK. As much I like Dougie and still like him now, I think it’s true that some players are not as willing to put money on the table in exchange for a contending outfit, especially considering that he has no kids as of yet and was already traded twice by different clubs at the age of 25. As appealing as the Carolina situation may be to me or other fans, I think it’s completely understandable to approach your playing career in a more team-neutral manner and just play for the highest bidder until you retire, especially if you never had a true club to call as your home. I just wish that more players that approach their careers this way were as transparent about it as Erik Haula.

As for the forward situation, I’m pretty sure that they are at least looking really hard at Tatar, especially since he fits the exact profile of someone that only wants a 1-2 year deal to increase his future UFA value.

Yeah, but he's another soft as a cheese small forward. We have enough of that.

You haven’t watched a lot of his games, I’m guessing. Tatar isn’t a soft player IMO. He’s often misjudged as such because he’s not all that gritty, but you kind of can’t be soft to get his kind of consistently high puck possession results. I think that he would play really well with Jordo.

Didn't Montreal mostly keep him in the suite?

They did in the postseason, but I don’t think that it was for any justifiable reason outside of prior stereotypes coloring the eyes of the coaching staff, among other factors. I also think that they mostly wanted big players and pegged Caufield and Gallagher as the only little players that they would play. Remember how much Bergevin/Ducharme and their group loves the beefy boys if they can get them. I mean, they love the beef so much that they were willing to get crapped on by the media and the fans for weeks after the draft in order to get their hands on some.

Im still hopeful on a top 6 signing and a bottom pair defender (Demers) and run 11-7. Hopefully Tatar and Demers would take a 1 year deal. I have zero faith that TDA is a capable defender. He has shown very little effort to doing so in his past.

DeAngelo wasn't signed to defend, though. He's there to rack up a shitload of points at 5-on-5 and on the PP. He should be playing in the top 4 for those reasons alone.

Slavin-DeAngelo
Skjei-Pesce
Cole-Bear

Or, if you're a scaredy cat:

Slavin-Bear
Skjei-Pesce
Cole-DeAngelo

Some of you guys are over-cautious about offensive defensemen when IMO you shouldn't be.

I’m coming around to Tatar, to the point I’ll be disappointed if he gets a deal somewhere else, unless he gets like $4M x 4 or similar. I’d be a fan at $3-4M x 2 max.

If they get Tatar, I think I would entertain a Niederreiter for Tarasenko trade:

Svechnikov-Aho-Teravainen
Tarasenko-Trocheck-Necas
Tatar-Staal-Fast
Martinook-Lorentz-Leivo

That looks quite good to me. Then on D:

Slavin-TDA/Bear
Skjei-Pesce
Cole-Bear/TDA

I think Bear and TDA will be interchangeable based on game situations. If TDA plays to his ability, he’s going to be a guy you want to give top 4 minutes to.

If not putting TDA on the top pair is right then I don’t want to be right. He is a specialist that is all. Our top pair should be at least expected to play in any situation. Slavin is good but he isn’t a miracle worker.

It's interesting.....even a guy like Recchi was known as a pure mercenary but he somehow ended up with his name on the cup a few times.

A player like Dougie is a luxury on a cup winning team. Players like Recchi are essential to them. End of the day, forwards who can score and bring grit and leadership are a lot more useful in winning cups than soft defenders who can't defend very well even if they score a lot in the regular season.
