My suggestion would be to heed this and change your expectations then. This team wasn't going to have a 140 point season or avoid a losing streak. It turns out they aren't in the top 1% of teams in NHL history. Go figure.
Well, yeah, see, I already did that. That’s why I wasn’t bothered much by the other losses in a row. I didn’t expect them to have a 140 season. I did expect them to beat the Flyers at home.

Every loss isn’t a problem. This one was to me.

It's almost poetic that it had to be Severson gifting them their best opportunity in the 3rd to cash it in.

I like Sevy a lot more than most. I often find myself being bummed that he likely won't be here after this season. Yet there are enough moments such as this one where I realize I'm actually comfortable with moving on.

We have replacements coming for him so I won't miss his gaffs!

You know what I think - They need a finisher. This game fits my narrative.

2 goals on 50 shots changes the night

Again, if they came in here with wins against the Rangers and Dallas, you tip your cap to Hart and move on.

This game, the one where they got 50 shots, was a loss. The 4th one in a row. It's a game that they needed.

I refuse to put it in a vacuum like all 13 wins in a row as 13, 1 game winning streaks either. They are streaks for a reason, you put a few together, start feeling good about yourself and ride the wave. The opposite can happen too.
you know, who was drafted to be the finisher? it's holtz.

but somehow a few extra wins in the first competitive season since years has a much higher priority than developing our snipper for the cup contention years. if the coaches aren't willing to play him, send him down to ahl. but let him watch 20 consecutive games from the press box and than limit his playing time to five minutes, when inserting him into the line-up during a rough stretch, is not really a confidence builder.

i really hope the devils come to senses with holtz and give him either a fair chance to establish himself in the nhl or send him down.

i felt the same way during the streak, and felt genuinely bad that he won’t be here to enjoy the fruits of the next decade or so.

but he makes some unbelievably bad decisions every single game, and now they’re costing us points. i’d rather have bahl on that pairing to be honest.

Do we scratch Severson next game or no?

I'm asking, I'm not making the call either way right this second.

Something to think about?

The coach wasn't very please. I seen his presser.
the coaches will talk to him and based on his reaction they will act.
if he already feels destroyed by his own fault, you don't gain anything by letting him sit. only his confidence will suffer and he will be even more prone the errors, when returning to the line-up.
if he points elsewhere to look for the culprit, you for sure sit him. multiple games.

Oh. Wait. Wait. You know what this is all setting up right? Schmid doesn’t win Saturday. Blackwood gets called up and gets the Canes on Tuesday and kickstarts a 10 game winning streak.
you forgot to mention the early extension blackwood signs in january.

but seems you had your share of managing courses. you never announce bad news on a friday. you never know what the impacted work forces (aka @Bleedred) will do over a long weekend.

I can only speak for myself but I've kinda been pushed back to earth with couple losses. Its funny how I forgot years of losing in couple months and now I've been humbled again that were not gonna win every game and thats fine.
When the team sucks you become numb to the losing because expectations plummet.

When the team is good, each individual loss feels crushing.

More of a roller coaster now, but still better than constantly being bitter/disappointed at how much the team sucks.

LOL the trials and tribulations of sports fandom.

All depends on what the magical Win O’ Meter says.
during the playoffs only the win and loss record counts. but during an 82 games regular season there are other things to be considered. playing well and losing is obviously preferable to playing bad and losing, as the losing is less predictive for the next games in the first instance.

Gotta give credit where credit is due, big ups to Mikey last night. Best game I've seen him play in a long time and he came closest to a tying goal hitting iron in the 3rd after we went down.

I couldn't believe he held his own against Deslauriers last night, thought he may have had a death wish but he got a couple good shots in at the end.

LOL nah you're right, Saturday. For some reason I'm thinking today's Friday and then two more days after that = Sunday
my wife wants every day to be friday.

thats hockey. Sometimes the better team loses because of a hot goalie performance. Its nothing to freak out over.
that's how blackwood became a fan favourite.

So to the guys who are OK with the great play and the loss, do you get upset when they play bad and win?
it's kind of a stupid trick question. you are never upset about a win.

i might be concerned with the performance. but as one game instance definitely not. it would take a series of bad performances resulting in few wins and mostly loses.

during an 82 games regular season you are bound to have streaks, some with w and some with l. looking at things past the naked score often is more indicative for future games and those indicators so far are still pointing towards the devils reaching the playoffs for the first time since '18, which is in my book a huge success. i won't take single game results out of context to feel bad about the team i love. i don't think it's a healthy strategy at all.

I actually get a more "concerned" / imposter vibes when we play horribly and win. It's like the "we won" feeling without the "we played good" feeling. Tonight is like reversed for me. But if it's only one game, it's not too worrisome.
i cherish those bad wins in one form.

the next day i go on the mainboard and read all those posts from the losing fan base (especially if it happened to be the rangers, habs, canucks or leafs), who can't handle themselves.

You've got to be trolling. Holtz was literally drafted 7OA for his finishing. He has 28 goals in 55 AHL games and Fabian has shown plenty of finishing ability.

Nobody in the league can score at will, not even McDavid. No one can save you from being goalied. The team has shown that it has plenty of finishing ability.
prime ovi was close to that. best goal scorer of all time.

No. I lived through the potential relocation to Nashville and the Devils remain a connection to my roots so I'd never want them to move. I can go see the Stars if I want. I've never connected with the Astros or the Texans or the Stars and I expect the same would be true for a hockey team in Houston. The Diablos wouldn't be the Devils.

I was sure McLeod was going to get his ass beat badly once I realized who he was fighting. But he hung in there.

I thought it was funny how Dano was calling for the linesmen to get in and break up the fight prematurely because he thought McLeod was going to get destroyed too. But the linesmen usually don't break it up until someone falls down, draws blood, or is clearly tapping out. And then when McLeod got those shots in, Dano's comments immediately changed to more respect for McLeod, and praise for the linesmen letting it continue.

You guys are NOT taking this out on each other or there'll be a bunch of you going to the penalty box at the rate this thread is spiraling.
you are talking about the death spiral? :sarcasm:

and yes sir, you are right. i will try my best to behave. but sometimes intentions/effort and the actual score aren't in sync.
