TcFlint is there a market for the OHL in Grand Traverse County? With 90,000 plus sounds like a good rink or an expansion to the present one might work? I LOVE the TC area, was just there this past Monday and would personally love road trips during the season there, plus would make a great natural rival with the Hounds!
Thanks for asking. I don't think so. Our arena only seats 1,100 and the city population year around is just 15,000. Yes, they sellout for the Red Wings practices and scrimmage games, but they get a lot of downstate people who come up every year for training camp. Great area, but we would need close to a 4,000 seat arena for the OHL to even consider us.

Packman...I actually was referring to all of the teams from the various leagues that Flint has had a hockey franchise. Correct me if I am wrong, I believe the worst season record that a Flint hockey franchise has ever had was in 1985-1986 when the IHL Flint Spirits went 16-60-0-6.

Well I’d say modern OHL history starts around 98-99, I think it was around then the OHL Went up to 20 teams with Brampton and Mississauga I think...

I’d consider all that stuff on the same page. Not sure on the stats since then, but you may have a case if you wanna call the Firebirds the worst.

Hard to believe only 15,000 in the winter as the traffic was way busier than any major intersection here in the Soo!

The POSITIVE news is that this could very well be over with come the end of this season. What we are witnessing is the management of the WORST team record wise to ever skate on the ice in Flint. Do you not see or are afraid to admit that the good hockey fans of Flint are being taken advantage of?

Do you really want to know what is NEGATIVE and OLD...people who continue to defend what's going on with the state of hockey in Flint. There is a whole lot more going on that I or anybody else has NOT posted on this board. If you really knew that, you likewise would speak up and say so.

What are you waiting for FirebirdsFan21...to speak up once there is no more Firebirds or OHL hockey in Flint? Now that really would be not only after the fact, but also NEGATIVE as you so tout.

I have no problems speaking up. I will support the team no matter what. I may not like what is going on with management, players etc.. But these things are out of my control. I will root for our boys NO MATTER WHAT. That is what fans do. If the team leaves next year, they leave. As fans we don't have any control. If there is a OHL team in Flint next year, I will again have my season tickets.

Hard to say the same thing with Football. I have been a Lions fan my whole life. I am used to be disappointed by owners and management. Do I like it, not at all but I continue to root for the team.

The Guelph Storm move Ryan Merkley to Peterborough. Various rumors about Tag Bertuzzi. Some reporting he wants out of Guelph. Guelph could use a top 4 D now it seems. Could be a decent landing spot for Gordeev if Busby were to return. With Gretz and Busby out it'd be difficult to move a D though. I'd love to see Tag in Flint and at 17, he'd fit in an updated Flint window.

Sounds like me, hardcore man. It was the same for us a couple years ago. Those of us who continued to attend hated what was going on but still supported our guys. I don’t know how I got it through it really. Thank God for beer and the like :)

Traverse City proper is only 15,000, but Grand Traverse County is 90,000+. I've long thought that Traverse City would be an excellent market for the OHL. An arena is the only thing they lack...and I would bet that the Turtle Creek casino complex would consider the idea. They could use the arena for much more than just hockey.

Nobody is looking to get Flint help this year. This season is over and no single player is going to help much. I don't have much hope for this group next year either. Stats might be somewhat similar on Bertuzzi and Holmes but they don't play similar styles. Holmes also gets more ice time than Tag does. I broke down some number on late game failures and players in droughts I'll post later. Holmes is definitely in that group. He'll probably pick up a hat trick in today's game before I post.

Traverse City's Baseball team draws around 2,500 a game (3,500 a few years ago), but then again there are thousands of summer cottages here and between 100,000 to 150,000 people in town every summer day. That does not translate into winter and still think that besides an arena, this community would have a hard time ever averaging 3,000 a game if we had the arena as a tourist community.

Gordeev, Bianconi, and Uba all scratched this afternoon. Kingston’s announcers hinted at Wellwood “sending a message”. Wonder what that’s all about...???

EDIT-Later in the broadcast they said that the Flint players had a team Christmas party (without the knowledge of the coaching staff) that resulted in some players sitting for today’s game.

They said something about some players having a “Christmas party” that the coaches were unaware of. Probably boys drinking and staying up
Thats my take on it

Hearing the Xmas party was quite the bender. Maybe it brought them together.

What should be the concern is why they kept it from the coaches if that’s really the case. Usually the coaching staff knows about these type of gigs but turn their heads.

Doesn't that seem like an odd trio? Poor 16yo Bianconi. Having to go home and face the parents right after this weekend. On another note, I'm gonna skip posting those numbers I mentioned earlier. Just focus on positives going into the break on a win streak. Dellandrea being back, Durham being on pace for a 40 goal season. Bangs getting a little better week by week. Vierling's abrupt change in effort and performance. Two posts, 1g 5a 6pts +1 in the last 7 games. A two game streak of good special teams numbers. Winterton breaking out of his goal drought. He's been playing good otherwise though and hopefully this is the start of another little goal scoring streak for him.

I heard this "party" kept them out later than they were supposed to be.
Here’s my thing. I get there are rules. But these kids have had a tough few months. With coaching changes and injuries and the Chaos
So what, they wanted to let loose. It’s a tough environment. Maybe this is why I’ll never be a coach but it can’t be easy.

Well they can let loose when they're home. And also most of those kids are still underage even in Canada.

LOLOLOL

There is nothing else to say about that. Just amazing.

I will say for as bad as this team as been, they definitely keep you interested with all the drama and stories surrounding them.

Ehh..it's junior hockey. Kind of par for the course usually. They screwed up. They should realize that now. They got scratched. I'm sure it was addressed more than that and the kids came out and picked up a 7-1 W and seemed in tune. Maybe they were playing hard for the guys that were in the press box. It's a little disappointing but it's over and the boys that were dressed handled business. Looked more like a turning point in the right direction....it could have went drastically the other way. Saw Rowe get into a LITTLE shoving match with Hakon and Durham. Then go after Wismer a bit late. It was interesting but I couldn't read too much into it on the tv.

Ok sure but most of us drank something before we were of age. We just weren’t watched Under a microscope like these kids are.
