I'd take McDonagh, but none of the other guys.
If you take a look around the league at the top defenders... Karlsson, Subban, Pterangelo/Shattenkirk, Doughty, Keith/Seabrook, Weber, Chara, Letang...
Out of all those teams listed, only the Predators are in dire need of a top forward, and they're not going to give up their captain.
And just analyzing the trades of the ones you mentioned...
Burke bent Sutter over a barrel on the Phaneuf trade. It was a panic deal by the Flames GM because his team was spiraling. Plus the Flames had a "glut of Olympic defensemen".
Jack Johnson was acquired by giving up Carter. With all due respect to Eberle he's not on Carter's level.
The Bouwmeester deal was a pretty light one on the Blues end, especially given that he still had term left on his deal. They still gave up a first and a decent prospect to get him. This would probably be the ideal deal but in my mind Bouwmeester is NOT the player to get you over the top, as the Flames found out.
If you're going to trade for a d-man it better be an established #1 with a few trophies. Campbell might be okay but his cap hit is crazy high and still has a few years left.
Bowemeester is bsically Jeff Petry, a useful player, to be sure, but not a No.1 or even No.2 guy.
I agree. He was vastly overrated and a sign of things to come for people who think poaching players from a loser organization like Florida is a good thing. (Bouwmeester, Ballard, Booth, the list goes on... Horton might be the only exception)
Honestly, it should have some teams thinking for sure.
I disagree with your last statement entirely. So we can't get one of the top 10-15 d-men in the league lets not bother?
The Oilers defense is not good enough. It needs to get better. No, we probably aren't going to get a superstar. But we dont need a superstar we need someone who can give us 25 good minutes a night, every game. Push us over the edge? The Oilers are so far from the summit right now that we just need someone who can get us moving upward.
I already listed 10 defensemen that were better than Campbell. Never mind Yandle/OEL, Suter, Edler, Byufglien... Campbell is not a top 15 defenseman in this league and he's not worth 7+ for the next three years.
I'm not saying don't try, but I'm VERY wary about picking up anything that was in a Florida Panthers uniform.
If the deal is there go for it but I don't think it's going to happen this early in the season unless teams start to panic.
Who do you think they can trade for realistically? IMHo, we are looking at older players in the twilight of career (Boyle, Markov, Timonen, Campbell) or younger guys who are not really top pairing material (Orpik, Coburn, L.Schenn, Gunnarson etc). Both types will cost a lot. How does Eberle for Coburn and a 2nd round pick sound? That's what it will take, I am afraid.
IMHO, we'd be better off moving J.Schultz for a better rounded defenseman in the off-season (Coburn, Gunnarson) and hope that Nurse/Klefbom can step right in and provide some offence.
Petry-Smid
Coburn-Ference
Nurse-Klefbom
will be a lot better than what we have currently.
Trading JS could blow up in MacT's face. Schultz should continue to develop his defensive game under Smith and Eakins for the next few years. He only just turned 23 in July, and he hasn't even played the equivalent of a full season in the NHL. He's the guy currently on our roster who is most likely to become an elite offensive defenseman. Most young, offensive-minded defenseman do also struggle in their own zone, ask Glen Sather about Paul Coffey.
In 10 more games, I'd say we'll have a fairly good indication of where Belov is at as well. He's got a lot of nice tools on display in the few games he's played: hard and accurate shot, good gap control and nice vision for quick break-out passes.
I think you are dreaming if you think J.Schultz can ever be adequate defender at the NHL level. He's probably one of the weakest players in the league and at 23 (turning 24 next year) one has to wonder how much bigger and stronger he can get. He probably will score 50 points at some point in his career, but also will cost plenty of goals against, if he plays 25 minutes a night. In the ideal world, he should see a lot of PP time, no PK time and very sheltered minutes ES. He's a bottom pairing PP specialist right now, who's being miscast as No.1 d-man.
