Haha I doubt many Americans were saying that. Besides, if you want to talk about overrating players, talk to some Leafs fans that say Matthews is better than McDavid. And guess what? Those Leafs fans are mostly Canadian.
Torontonians don't count. They're the biggest wannabes in the world.

Seems like this kid's going to be a very good player. Maybe the face of a Seattle team if they get a team for 2020 and they pick #1 overall?

For "Non McDavid level" fans.

What need Alexis F. to be on his level? Forget statistics for now. Simply tell us, what he doesn't have from McDavid.

Speed and ability to operate at that speed.

You can find McDavid level characteristics in other players (shot, iq, even skating and puck control) there is not a better player though at putting defenders on their heels due to his speed and puck control at that speed.

agreed
I dont see another player coming up or in NHL that has the speed of processing the play/skating/stickhandling and reaction time at the insane pace its all happening at the same time

have never seen someone so dangerous everytime puck touches his stick

unreal

Not even the same realm when it comes to being able to make plays at such a high speed. That's really what separates McDavid from the rest of the league.

Lafreniere has probably the same skill in his hands as Mcdavid did at his age (maybe better). Mcdavid can play at much higher levels though.

He doesn't have speed, agility and the ability to do play at a really high pace like McDavid does. You can't teach this, it's either you have elite speed or you don't. Lafreniere does have better combativity, shot and strenght at the same age tho. It will be interesting to see how he progress.

aside from the goal how did he play

If you're Canadian and you are subscibed to Bell you can see it on "on demand". As for Lafreniere he had a quiet 1st period but a very strong 2nd and 3rd. Thomas got hurt in the 1st and they put Lavoie with Alexis and Dellandrea. They have been flat out dominant. Lafreniere showed great combativity, skills and IQ again. Winning battles against the board, controlling puck down low, making nice pass to his teammates and helping defensively.

In the first period he was trying to catch Boqvist who was able to generate a quick wrister to score a goal. He was a little late on the play but he was still the 3rd man back of all the forward. Even though his coverage wasn't adequate, it shows that he has some defensive IQ as he took the center's position (Thomas at the time).

Worth mentionning that in a pre game interview he said he'd like to improve his defensive game because he wants to become a complete player. He consider himself as a playmaker who can score.

For those who have watched him play extensively what current or former NHL players does he compare to best stylistically. Just style not ceiling.

Winger Auston Matthews. Probably even more so than Svechnikov who was compared to Matthews. I think Svechnikov is a better skater than both. Lafreniere and Matthews are similar level skaters.

If you want a winger comparison, he reminds me of a two inches taller Kucherov who doesn't skate as well as Kucherov. But similar, otherwise.
