As a proud father this is such tragic news especially with Jordan Staal's child passing as well. My heart goes out to Erik, his wife and his entire family. RIP.

The moment I read the title, I was in tears. I'm not a father, but I've been going through a lot these past few years and one of the shining hopes in my life has been my niece and nephews. Children bring so much joy. EK is such a likeable player and person. This makes my heart ache to no end.

Poor guy has been through an absolute roller coaster in his time in Ottawa. Freak injuries, issues with management and ownership, getting married then divorced young, now this to add as well. Feel terrible for the guy and hope he can find some stability in his life. Probably the only Sens player I've ever really liked as well, seems like a nice guy and is obviously a fantastic hockey player.

Yea, few players seem to battle as much adversity as Karlsson. But he's still one of the most enthusiastic individuals in the game.

Truly one of the best role models in the game.

It was a miscarriage. Awful news still

Technically a stillbirth, rather than a miscarriage. Miscarriage happens in the first half of the pregnancy, whereas stillbirth is something that comes later like in this situation (8 months).

I bring it up because I don’t think a lot of people realize that about 1 in 4 women experience a miscarriage at some point. That’s an enormous number and really puts in perspective how many women (and their partners) are walking around every day in the emotional turmoil of losing a pregnancy. Most of the time, only the couple and their very inner circle realize it happened.

Just something to think about as we pass condolences to Karlsson and his family.

Wtf...why does this happen to hockey players so much? Coincidence?

Athletes sharing on social media progress of pregnancies makes everyone more aware that they are expecting and when something unfortunately happens to the baby.

It used to be that people didn't talk about it and things were kept very hush-hush. My brother was born premature and died shortly after birth 45 years ago. My dad still cries when mentioning him. But even back then, parents just took down the baby furniture and pretended they never were pregnant. Now, people have memorial services.

Absolutely devastating. With her being due in April, the baby must have either been still born or died shortly after birth. I can't imagine what they are going through.

I think the stat is 1/4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. So something significantly more than 1/4 will experience it. I'm sure not all women are aware they we're ever pregnant before the miscarriage occurred, no idea how frequent that is though. Glad you brought the point up

We had multiple miscarriages before having our child. A couple were 2nd term and a few late first trimester
It was very difficult and absolutely brutal for my wife. We almost lost our daughter as well, and though she’s 24 now, it still makes me sleep better when I hear from her and know she’s ok

Terrible news, hope all around their family, will give them the support a love they need

Unbelievable heartbreaking. I remember watching the reveal when he slapshotted that puck, and it turned to blue dust to reveal he was having a boy. How ecstatic he was.

RIP :(

"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." - John 14:1-3

Lost my father to cancer 18 months ago and that totally broke me.

Losing a child must be 1000 times worse, can't even imagine that pain.

Rest in piece, little one.
