I think Karlsson will be the better player of the two but I doubt he would have scored more points than Rundblad did last year like some of you say. Rundblad played on a Skelleftea team that was the number #1 scoring team in the league while Karlsson would have played on a team that was unable to score last year.. they were deadlast in scoring and while Karlsson certainly would have helped that team score more goals it wouldnt have been enough to make him hit 50+ points and he would certainly not lead the league in scoring like some said

Well for starters would karlsson have a lindström lehtonen or anders forsberg in 09 if he stayed another year?

Oh so your argument may have actually been in favour of Karlsson?

Considering what I've seen from that kid, I think he could have done a lot of scoring on his own in that league. If the coach let him run wild. He can play cat and mouse in the NHL on small ice...I think he could do it in Sweden on big ice.

Yes and no:laugh: Karlsson could very well have scored more points in rundblads shoes this season, but to assume both would get 50+ not being on the #1 scoring team is like vippe so gently put it, not very realistic.

Not sure if serious.

Rundblad posted the second best points total by a defenseman ever in the SEL last year, with 50 points in 53 games. He also won the Salming Award, awarded to the best defenseman in the SEL. Erik Karlsson topped out at 10 points in Sweden. I am completely serious.

45 pts in NHL>50 pts in SEL. Now, I'm not stating an opinion here, but Rundblad's achievements last season can't be used to put him ahead of Karlsson.

I'm not saying that he's better right now, I'm saying I think he has better potential. This thread is asking who will be the better player in the future, not who is better right now.

Same concept. I can't see that argument being used to justify that point. If you have seen a lot of both of them and thats your opinion I have no problem with that, but going off of stats, even if deemed an acceptable mode of comparison, doesnt prove anything for Rundblad.

Although 45 points is a lot from a defenseman in the NHL, i still think 50 points/55 games in SEL vs 45 points/75 games in the NHL is debatable. No other defenseman in the SEL was even close to 50 points last year, the second best was Magnus Johansson (An offensive defenseman who played in the olympics) and he only had 38 points. 50 points in the SEL is much more rare than 45 in the NHL by a defenseman.

Rundblad also had most points of any player in the playoffs. Another thing to take into consideration is that there arent many PPG players in the SEL (only 2 last season) and its more defense-oriented than the NHL.

Both players are strong offensively but need to work more on their defense though.

Definitely Karlsson. How many defensemen can skate like EK? Plus, he's a proven commodity at this point. Even if he never polishes his defensive game (which he will), he'll be a top 5-10 scorer for defenders for most of his career.

As a Sens fan, I'm excited that both these players are in the system. Its going to allow the team to play a very exciting brand of hockey.

Correct me if Im wrong, but wasnt Karlsson supposed to have a vastly more developed two way game?

With Rundblad being the high risk MIke Green-style guy?

If Karlsson's development so far is any indication to how Rundblad may fair at the NHL level, then I expect some serious growing pains for Rundblad in establishing his presence at the defensive end of the rink.

I like Rundblad better because of size, but right now I dont think he can be counted on as a two-way guy, more of a PP specialist.

The comparison is kinda hard to make because Rundblad has yet to play a game in the NHL. Yes, he has accomplished something exceptional in SEL but, even though it's a men's league, it's not on par with the level of play of the NHL. It's also on a bigger rink, so he won't have nearly has much space as he had last year to make some of the plays he made. I am sure that a smart player like him will be able to adjust to the NHL though.

For now I think Karlsson is still the one i'd choose. What he has done in two seasons in the NHL at his age is very special. But if Rundblad was to become better than him, he'll be one hell of a player!

Karlsson was a point per game in the AHL in his first year. I'm sure if he was in SEL he would be the #1 defenseman there.

It's their explosiveness off the mark that is in different leagues. Not easy to find players that are in Karlsson's class as far as first couple steps go. It's a big part of what makes Karlsson's potential as high as it is, he's hard to catch, and he can catch you.

just look at the first deke at center ice in that video. It is absolutely beautiful and it takes Rundblad no time to reach his top speed.

I think Karlsson is indeed more explosive off his first stride but Rundblad's size and skating makes him that much more intriguing.

I'm very familar with both situations. But you are basing this on one year for each player without taking into count that Runblad played 3 full years in the SEL vs 1 for Karlsson. In his first year Runblad also had 10 points followed by 13, at the same age Karlsson was when he posted the 10. Either way I'm happy both are Senators.

Karlsson imo is the safer pick, but Rundblad oozes NHL potential that makes me feel that if he does play to his fullest, he'll be a step above EK. So I'd take the risk on Rundblad. Karlsson's a great d-man either way, so the Sens are lucky to have both haha.
