Let's hypothetically entertain the possibility that Stamkos would be available and he wanted to play for the wings. The way Holland operates he would sign Stamkos and then go into "we like our team" mode. Holland will sign Stamkos and call it a day and the team will be left with an overpaid top center with a defense that struggles to get him the puck. Fun season. If the team stands any chance at improvement Holland needs to focus on the biggest problem which is a D that can't get it done in the playoffs, because if he doesn't make a move on D then the D will remain the same with the exception of the Quincey re-signing July 2nd.
Our team struggles to score and I would like to see the opportunity for that to change when you have a backend that can move the puck up the ice with control and purpose. Small skilled wingers need that and small skilled wingers are what the wings draft and develop.
Those 50 goals will get the wings in the playoffs for a first round exit with this D. So yes, that is not one iota of difference. Not saying that your direction is not merited, it just requires a lot more faith in Holland which I don't think is justified or earned at this stage in his career.
You have to start somewhere. Even with an improved defense our team isn't getting out of the first round with their forward core. We have Larkin as a top 6 center of the future but we need one more and Stamkos is the best one to hit the market in years. He should be the #1 priority.
It's pretty hard to completely revamp a team in one offseason. If we get Stamkos or Radulov though than all of a sudden some players (Nyquist, Tatar and/or Sheahan) become expendable in a trade for a top d-man.
