With Mitts now being out "week-to-week" BUF could draw in as a serious trade partner here for CHI. Also have the cap space to allow the Hawks to dump Shaw's cap hit.

To :sabres

C Dylan Strome ($3M RFA '22)
W/C Andrew Shaw ($3.9M LTIR UFA '22)

To :hawks

Conditional 2022 2nd/3rd rnd pick (Strome GP based)

Hawks probably want a roster player back. I'm guessing a big winger who can play in the top 9 or a dman. Hawks are in win now mode.

Why would Chicago help Buffalo?

I heard the same thing. Buffalo being a top destination. Chicago is actively looking to move Shaws contract by moving strome and shaw it would be in the simplest terms a wash and free up close to 10 million dollars that chicago could add a player near the trade deadline. Buffalo has the cap space to absorb both contracts

Shaw is not playing with the Blackhawks this season following his retirement in the Spring after dealing with post-concussion symptoms. He also has only one-year left on his current deal, with a $3.9M cap hit, which is currently sitting on Chicago’s LTIR. As Seravalli mentions, the actually salary for Shaw is not that much ($2.9M actual insured salary), but there are only a handful of teams that could use the cap space correctly in acquiring his contract, plus an asset from the Blackhawks. The New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres come to mind right away.

Chicago could possibly package Strome with the Shaw contract in a deal to avoid losing a future asset (like a third or fourth-round pick). At this point, draft capital may be more valuable to the Blackhawks than Strome is as a lineup scratch. If the Blackhawks were able to move Shaw’s deal, with or without an extra asset, they will have more cap flexibility once Caleb Jones returns to health and to the lineup. Chicago could be out of LTIR usage at that point, as well as under the salary cap and able to add at the trade deadline, should they be contenders.

It's mutually beneficial. CHI gains space, which they have been trying to gain through unloading Shaw's deal & a high 2nd/3rd for a guy who's not dressing - BUF gets a 24yo pending RFA pivot badly in need of a change of scenery/new scheme. It's literally a win-win.
Not worth it for a 50 point player

Shaws already on LTIR and his deal expires afterthis year. Use your head next time and come again
