Losing Brown or Zaitsev this summer is nothing to be upset over.

The only tight cap year he Leafs will have his 2019/2030 season and after that the team will have more flexibility.
Brown can be traded, Zaitsev will be very hard to trade unless we attach something nice to him and that still will not be enough.

My opinion is that it is good bye Nylander as we simply can not afford his cap hit and keep Kappy and Johnsson.

All of this could have been avoided if we simply prioritized this past off season.

I want Mathews and Marner as well as Nylander moving forward but I can not see it happening. Our projected cap for the next season going into this season was likely was 24 million for the 3 at the high end with all signing long term deals. Now it is going to be over 4 million more closer to 5m.

You guys realize negotiations aren't Dubas and the agent in a room pretending to be Gordon Gecko right? We have AGMs that are cap management specialists for this exact situation, they're not going to go out of the boundaries of what the overall management team has decided the limits are.

Not one bit. He will pay marner his share than hopefully he can get kap? Johnsson on good deals. Also hope he is proactive and negotiated with dermott this offseason . Could get him locked up for cheap instead of giving him a year in the top 4 and chance to up his price.

Matthews took him through the ringer, close to max money and straight to UFA. What exactly did Matthews sacrifice? 93% signing bonus as well
Didn't realize 11.634 and 15.9 were close.... guess I need to brush up on my math.

I’d be highly surprised if Dubas ops to trade Nylander. They’ll penny pinch Johnsson and Kapanen on bridge deals, trade brown. The big question mark will be what happens with the D, since I’m expecting another trade in that area.

Meh.

Fair value.

The only ones upset are the ones who took Shanahan at his word that the guys needed to take less.

This will cost us some players. The list of those that will be discussed include Kapanen, Gardiner, Hainsey, Kadri, Zaitsev but all teams face this at some point.

We are no different.

It ain't why I'm upset. I'm upset because we blatantly overpaid him relative to his best comparable.

I never put jack shit into Shanny's quote.

Alright this is insane. Either hire someone competent to negotiate with agents or hire a new gm.

I'm fine with both Matthews and Nylanders terms if they came with 8 years, but they don't. Wtf is this? 5 years? How did we ever agree to this?

We overpaid on a 5 year deal, how anybody can defend this is beyond me. Sure the league dynamics are changing, but this was an overpayment.

There's no chance we get Kap or Johnnson on team friendly deals. Dubas is a terrible negotiator. We'll probably give Kap 5million taking him to FA and AJ the same thing

I don’t understand why we are paying them these rediculous signing bonuses if they are not taking a discount. It’s such poor management. If you sign them at value don’t sweeten the deal.

Babcock’s contract ends before then. Matthews gets every chance to see the direction of this franchise and the one in Arizona.

He probably would have held out if they forced 8.

And Dubas/Shanahan couldn’t win that PR battle. Even if they won it (by calling Matthews greedy, etc) they would lose it. You know ?

And it appears we're the only team to be victimized by it thus far.

I wonder what the excuses will be when the rest of the RFA crop signs far better deals?

I think if players like point and Rant come in lower, it will really piss people off in Toronto, and the optics will look terrible for Dubas and AM

People are forgetting the contracts coming off the books next season:

Oz - .925
Lindholm - .925
Gardiner - 4.05m
Hainsey - 3.0m
Ennis - .650

If they trade Brown for picks. That's another 2.1 million.

Don't forget we currently are using Horton's contract as part of the cap this season. If we hit cap we can spend 5.3 million over. That's the ace in the sleeve that people seem to forget. Right now we aren't using it.

Marleau comes off the books the following season, another 6.25m

We have players on cheap deals that can fill all of those positions cheaper:

Moore - .775
Rosen - .750
Bracco - .842
Liljegren - .895
Sandin - .925

Then if there is a way to trade Zaitsev if we want to that's even more cap room.

The Leafs will be ok. There is no concern. We should be able to keep the top 4 together (Tavares, Matthews, Marner, Nylander) for the next 2 seasons no problem and still make team better.

Also keep in mind the cap continues to rise 3-5 million annually. Something they aren't talking about is that the US TV deal expires in 2 years. With hockey booming in places like China and expanding in the US with markets like Vegas and Seattle. The next TV deal will be at least double what it is today if not more. Meaning teams make more, which means cap goes drastically up.

There shouldn't be a worry in the world. Dubas knows what he is doing.

For anyone who's played at least 38 games in a season, the only players to have ever surpassed Matthew's current 1.99 goals/60 are Crosby in `10/11, Stamkos in `11/12, and currently Ovechkin
is rolling a 2.06. Matthews assist rate is the same as Reilly. And he managed to break Bozak's team record for Takeaways. He's a premier player who's getting paid like one.

He’s opted to spend the teams money on their best players, all of whom have been signed within the comparables. No reason to complain really.

Now if he starts to sign bottom of the lineup guys to big dollar/term deals I’d be less enthused

Who is Matthews comparable at $11.6 million x 5 years?

That's a better contract than McDavid got due to the term .... even when considering cap growth
