I think that the logo will probably get retired at some point in the next 10-15 years. The Hawks are the only major pro team with a traditional “Indian Head” logo now, and as such will be the flashpoint for any additional major social unrests for things deemed inappropriate. And note, I am trying to phrase that without attempting to step on either sides’ toes, both those think that it’s blatantly and obviously offensive and those that think the notion it’s offensive is ridiculous.
That being said, I don’t think that the “Blackhawks” name will ever go away. All the team would have to do is emphasize the avian aspect of the name, as there isn’t a Blackhawk tribe that can claim ownership of the name. Chief Black Hawk was a Sauk, and I know the lineage connecting his name with the military unit that inspired the team name, but I’m not anticipating a scenario where that connection is ever deemed absolute enough once a new logo is eventually adopted. Once that’s done, it’s about as generic as any other name.
However, I don’t think that the new regime is more or less likely at this point to support a rebrand.
