In this video they act like it’s a matter of when not if, that there’s no way this logo could survive another decade in todays climate. I personally hope they keep it as it’s all I know. Just wanted to get some opinion. It’s not as outward as the other teams who have changed

So there is still a chance they make a change? I was kinda hoping the issue has been put to rest since ownership is not changing or anything
I don't think its a current conversation at all, but there is always a chance it does get changed. We have to respect the opinion of Native Americans.

What could you see happening to make it a conversation again? Seems like the chiefs and Braves have also kinda dodged the bullet

No.

There is nothing derogatory steaming from the name, logo or jersey.

The team name was not spawned from racism. Rather to honor the person.
So to be 100% honest I bought 3 bedard jerseys. I wasn’t thinking at all when I bought them. I forgot the team may rebrand and it was days later Rocky passed which got me to thinking about all this - that maybe the younger son Wirtz caves on the issue. I prob should have waited to buy the bedard sweaters

I hope they never change the logo or team name. But I also hope the Hawks promote our local Native American history a little more than they currently are.

I feel like this is a great opportunity for both sides to really lean in on a common goal and let the people of Illinois know what was going on here before the land was colonized. Honor some historical figures on game nights, maybe publish a book or make a documentary about Sauk culture. Something actually cool and interesting. We’re all living on land that isn’t native to our ancestors, it would be nice if we appreciated that a little more. I don’t think we need to strike the logo in order to do that though.

Did you ever see this video they posted?

Also the land grant I believe is posted on the team website

I think that the logo will probably get retired at some point in the next 10-15 years. The Hawks are the only major pro team with a traditional “Indian Head” logo now, and as such will be the flashpoint for any additional major social unrests for things deemed inappropriate. And note, I am trying to phrase that without attempting to step on either sides’ toes, both those think that it’s blatantly and obviously offensive and those that think the notion it’s offensive is ridiculous.

That being said, I don’t think that the “Blackhawks” name will ever go away. All the team would have to do is emphasize the avian aspect of the name, as there isn’t a Blackhawk tribe that can claim ownership of the name. Chief Black Hawk was a Sauk, and I know the lineage connecting his name with the military unit that inspired the team name, but I’m not anticipating a scenario where that connection is ever deemed absolute enough once a new logo is eventually adopted. Once that’s done, it’s about as generic as any other name.

However, I don’t think that the new regime is more or less likely at this point to support a rebrand.

There's a spectrum of disdain for these. People too often boil these topics to black and white and about the word offensive. Logos or names seen as slurs/insulting have gone.

There's a large segment of natives that do not care. Plenty don't get involved in anything. But you do see more activists who are younger millennial or genz Z indigenous people. Some just don't want any logo/names to exist based on their existence. That's still not the overall accepted or promoted stance. So some major push to remove Cheifs, Braves, or thr Blackhawks isn't there yet.

Seems like there is a fair amount of folks who feel we could hang onto the logo. That’s why it’s tough is the opinion is split 50-50

I wonder why so many of our sports teams both professional and amateur have so often used our Native American iconography to represent the spirit of their team. To me it's pretty clearly a statement of our admiration for all the positive attributes associated with the Native way of life and in particular their warrior spirit which includes such things as honour and bravery to name just a couple. Sure the Redskins and Indians were more an outlier but I do feel by and large the majority of names and icons used were in salute to the First Nations peoples rather than a bastardization.
Perhaps an unconscious inclination but deep down we long for that pure way of life where man and nature did their dance!

Honestly, I don't care much either way. I like the logo, but I could be easily won over with another one provided they kept most/all of the color palate. Worst case, name wise, is going back to Black Hawks (two words).

I'd rather keep the Indian head over the unknown of a newer logo, but it won't be the end of the world if it changes. I prefer the Bruins bear logo over the spoked B, despite the main logo's long history. And the Orca logo for the Nucks are better than the hockey stick. Logos change all the time, and they don't always come out like ass.

Just keep giving me a good looking logo and allow me to keep calling them the Hawks.

I dont think it would be a bad time to do it, but I doubt Danny wants his first act in charge to be that controversial.

It will change on at least one of the jerseys by the time Bedard is contending for a cup.

I agree with you in principle, but the person delivering a complement doesnt determine whether it is, in fact, a compliment. The recipient does.

I dont think they’ll change it yet, but they will eventually. Simply because a bunch of white Americans using native iconography to sell merchandise is a pretty bad look.

This may have changed since then...

But back when the MF'ers in charge started accepting all things gambling into pro sports they allowed "official partner" deals to be signed.

One of the deals was the biggest native owned casino in the US partnered with: The Cowboys. No, I didn't make that up.

Which is ironically the vast majority of people who want it changed.

The vast majority of people lobbying to change it are "woke" white people who try to find offense in everything they can. We've been over this a million times on this board, though, I don't see the need for another thread for it. I don't see it even coming close to being changed in the next 5-7 years, and thinking that it'll be changed by the time Bedard is contending for a Cup is just silly to me.

I think if they don’t do it one year from now in summer 2024, they won’t do it. I mean this is like changing the Yankees or Red Sox or packers uniforms really. Just not something you see happen
