I didnt want Simmonds, but for one year it is a no risk play. Also Simmonds is perfect to protect our young kids and Hall and Subban like him soo..okay I guess.

I cant stand Simmonds, but the reality is he's the sort of player this team desperately needs, and at 1 year he's a perfect stopgap even if he's mostly shot and only pots 15 goals. If he returns to 25 goal form, it's a home run of a year.

I don't know why so many have a low opinion of this guy, for a 4-year period he avg 30 goals a season for Philly and wasn't too long ago and he's a tough son of a ***** to play against. I love this signing.

Others do not 'cause the belief is that HE STINKS!!! STINKS, I TELL YOU!! (did I mention he stinks?) :D

But in all seriousness...I hope he has a Healthy year for us and if he doesn't pan out, he's gone after this season. Plain and simple.

I also do not understand the outrage by some. It's a 1-year deal.

Can't wait to watch Hughes dish it to him on the PP.

Simmonds is money on the PP in front of the net

Part of Simmonds' decline is no doubt his own play, but one thing that happens when a player declines is that he starts getting put with worse players which amplifies the effect of the decline. In 2017-18 his biggest linemates were Jordan Weal and Valteri Filppula - he spent nearly half his 5v5 time with these guys. Last season wasn't much better in that regard.

This type of player was always a necessity this off-season, especially once we drafted Jack Hughes. If you don't think there will be players on the opposing team every night that will be looking to put a baby-faced, rookie, 18 year old like Hughes through the ice and the boards every time he's galloping up ice with the puck or battling along the wall, and will try to intimidate him from ever feeling confident on the ice, I don't know what to tell you.

Before Simmonds, who on this team put the fear of God into any opposing player trying to pull that? Who scares the shit out of anyone even attempting that? Simmonds has that level of intimidation. And that's for sure a major reason he was signed.

For 1 year, an excellent signing. Very happy with this.

we didn’t give him $5M to play on the 4th line
Simmonds is cooked. 4th liner and power play specialist at best. The role that Brian Boyle used to play for us.

At even strength, I would rather play Zacha in top 6 than Simmonds. And i'm not high on Zacha at all. If we don't trade for a top 6er, then Boqvist should have an excellent chance at making this team.

They're not going to play Simmonds on the 4th line, at least not right away.

i understand that’s your opinion, i’m just saying we’re not paying him $5M to play on our fourth line.

personally i think you’re selling the guy way short, he’s only 30 and if used in the right way he’ll clean up plenty of garbage goals while hughes and bratt to their razzle dazzle bullshit

How do you figure that?
I've posted this before a couple times.

Presuming a cap of 84M, which is pretty generous considering how little the cap rose this year...

Re-sign:
Butcher$3,000,000
Zacha$2,500,000
Mueller$1,000,000
Hughes$925,000
Smith$925,000
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Hall$11,000,000
Hischier$7,000,000
Bratt$6,000,000
Vatanen$6,000,000
Blackwood$2,000,000
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Leaves 5.7M.

Of course these numbers are estimates, but probably won't be off by more than 1-2M total.

-edit-
That's with holes at 2LW/RW and 4LW/RW

I think Vat became a rental the minute they traded for Subban and I'm not sure I'd want him anyway after his last year plus. Unless somehow he excels playing his off side (which he didn't when they put him there in Anaheim) they aren't gonna allocate like $20 million for three RD's

Meh. It's really, really ballpark. I'm sure some will sign lower, some will sign higher, but in total, I don't think it's THAT far off.

Even if we trade him, we'll need a replacement. Maybe we get a 2M/yr guy. i dunno.
