God damnit. We’re never going to be free from him
PK is an issue here, Butcher never has never played PK IIRC. Tennyson didn’t last year but had in Buffalo and has this year a bit.

Vats can do it but Ruff probably wants doesn’t want throw everything at him in his 1st game back.

Tennyson has rarely ever played the PK in his career. If you don't want to throw everything at Vatanen then keep him off the PP and put him on the PK. Have Smith, Severson, and Butcher be the 3 dmen on the PP.

I was looking at rates before elsewhere, but, yeah, looking at the actual counts here Tennyson hasn’t played much PK at all ever.

Tennyson only PKs now when a defensemen on a PK unit is in the penalty box. So it is a question of who can PK in a pinch, Smith hasn’t gotten any PK time so he doesn’t jump in when another defenseman is in the box feeling the shame. We’re back to the problem of Butcher being redundant with Smith, since Ruff seems to trust Tennyson more as an all-round defenseman.

I’m not anti-Butcher but I can see how he keeps ending up with the short end of the stick here. He should eventually get a game in soon (right?) but Vatanen is already getting in and Ruff might not want that much of a turnover.

Matt Tennyson - Summary - Natural Stat Trick

If it was say Kulikov (before his great start) in Tennyson's spot then I could understand the reasoning. I wouldn't have thought Kulikov is all that good and think that Butcher is a far superior player but Kulikov can be a capable NHLer and PK guy. Tennyson though just isn't an NHL caliber guy at all and never has been. I'd take the risk that one of Butcher or Smith will have to PK at some point because Butcher is just so much better and will provide so much more value than Tennyson elsewhere. If I'm Butcher I'd be furious that I'm getting dicked around for Matt f***ing Tennyson

The big hope now is that none of these guys wind up with any long-term issues. There's still no way to be 100% sure what the story is concerning long-term health implications from having COVID, even for people who were asymptomatic, and I'd hate to see any of these have to deal with these unknowns. Bad enough it just sucks for anyone, period, but these guys are elite athletes and even something minor that sticks around could alter their career trajectory, so fingers crossed that won't be the case for anybody.

On the bright side, there's a weird excitement to this (again, assuming everyone's legitimately ok), of being so close to actually having the full team ready to play together for the first time. Nico's obviously the biggest deal in that regard, but it's hard not to get excited at how dynamic the club looked before this crisis and how much better it could look with a couple of halfway decent penalty killers back in there.

Especially when you see a guy like Rossi test positive in November then be able to come back for the WJC only to end missing the whole season with complications

all Palms said is he talked to him and he's feeling better, he could be in the hospital for all we know

And what if Travis is?

Not that I believe he is because Palms sounded like he expected Travis to be back soon but let's say that Travis is in the hospital.

Wouldn't he have to be placed on a Ventilator or something?

It would have to be pretty bad for Zajac to be in the hospital so I kind of doubt Palms would be as forthcoming with his news as he was.

Just my opinion, though.

ok relax, I doubt its all that bad, but he's been on the list for what 2 weeks now? you'd think he'd be ready to practice by now unless he did get pretty sick
