I simply keep coming back to the fact that Shero had 5 years to accumulate assets, won the draft lottery twice and this is what we have to show for it. It currently seems inexcusable.
That's just it. He only had 5 years to accumulate assets. Lou left him an additional 2nd, 3rd, and 3rd from dealing Jagr and Zidlicky, but cost him a 3rd from the Ruutu trade, and the Devils were short a 5th and 7th in 2015 when Shero took over - that was from the D'Agostini trade and the Anthony Brodeur trade. The Devils did not trade any UFA-to-be player that Lou left over for an asset - they got a 3rd for Gelinas, they got a 5th for Wedgewood, they got Smith-Pelly for Matteau, they got Hayden for Quenneville. Shero has not picked twice in the first round since he took over.
The biggest organizational need by far is goaltender - the Devils have drafted one every year since Shero took over, but they have not been successful picks. Between 2011 and 2014, the Devils drafted a favor to Martin Brodeur, who is presently the backup goalie at the University of Ottawa. Nothing Lou did in his final years makes me more upset than that pick, even though 7th round picks are very unlikely to become anything, the idea that you can be drafting lower and with fewer picks than other teams every year and have the arrogance to basically throw a pick away to assuage a franchise legend.
If anything, Shero tried to rebuild too quickly. He had one elite player when he took over in Schneider and acquired another one in Hall. Other than that, it takes a long time to build up from nothing. Binghamton and New Jersey should both be better this season, there's no question, but neither team should really be good. The organization needs at least 2 goaltenders.
