Why wouldn't MIN just retain 50% in a trade, and take back a nothing player like Honka? Even throw in a 3rd round pick?
Not sure, but he had a NMC. So Suter could have just rejected any trade, knowing the Wild want to get rid of him, and forced them to buy him out so he could pick his own team and collect two paychecks.

I don't think the term is even bad. His style of play should age well enough that he could be a serviceable bottom pairing guy at the end of the contract.

The cap hit is low enough to be a 3rd pairing D. I would rather pay him more for short term but it is pretty clear he wanted 4yrs.

Going to be interesting to see Dallas's D pairings for next season.

Wouldn't want that contract at that price on the Avs, but it's not that bad. Worst case they pay a ~2nd to dump his contract in 2-3 years.

4 years is a bit dicey, as Suter has already shown signs of slowing down. He can still play in the top-four, but the worry is for ageing guys their game could suddenly fall off at any time.

If he has to be bought out for the final year, then it's no big deal, especially if they front load the contract. I think it's a reasonable contract.

The extra term is how you get a player of this caliber at a reasonable number.

If he declines late in the deal, it’s a number that is relatively easy to move or just buy out. This is a good deal for both sides.
