I have this weird feeling he starts the season in NJ. Castron said he was super determined to make the team and from everything I've heard it sounds like he has the skills and character to pull it off. I'm looking forward to camp/prospects game/preseason.

i think it’s more likely we see him at the end of the year after his season is over, which i would definitely prefer.

Sorry everyone. I said Binghamton because I mistakenly associated that with where young devils draft picks play prior to being called up.

So to prevent that mistake from happening again, can someone tell me where a player such as Ty would go if he does not qualify for the Main Team as of yet?

@Devils Dominion said juniors.

What exactly is "juniors"?

The CHL, OHL and QMJHL where primarily underage North Americans play until they get called up to the pros. I assume you've heard of the nine-game rule where said players get to audition for nine games at the NHL level before their teams have to decide to keep them or send them back - well it's in place to protect the junior leagues from poaching of talent. Players playing with juniors teams can't just go to the AHL unless they get signed to professional tryout contracts after their junior season is over with.

That last part is similar to college players who have to play out their college season before pro teams can sign them though in that case they can either send them to the AHL or right to the NHL. A lot of college players that sign after the season do get enticed to sign with NHL service time to start the clock toward FA a la Santini and Wood.

"juniors" is a level of amateur hockey. Much like "squirts", "bantams" etc, which are younger age brackets, where as juniors is the oldest. Canadian juniors the guys will be between 16-21(though the better talent is gone by the age of 20), where as in the states, in leagues like the USHL and NAHL, though the age requirements are the same, the guys are usually 18-20, as many kids will play HS first, then play a couple years of juniors then if they are good enough, go on to college.

Plenty of differences between the US and Canadian Juniors, but pretty sure the age requirements are the same.

The CHL is really the umbrella organization under which the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL reside.

This is clearly the highest level of juniors hockey in North America(and the world actually).

These leagues pay their players a stipend of sorts, thus these kids can not then go on to US colleges.

The OJHL, which is not a CHL league, does not pay their players a stipend, thus the US college route is still available. The US leagues as mentioned above also do not pay a stipend, so again college is an option. Though the overall talent level is significantly lower in these leagues as compared to the CHL, you will still see some high level guys come through.

The best US players, if they don't go to the CHL themselves will often suit up for the US developmental team, which is a whole other thing.

Okay thanks.

Now I fully understand.

I wasn't too familiar with how things worked in that regard except for the 9-game rule you mentioned.

So how long you think he'll spend down there until he's called up?

pretty sure if he starts down there, he stays down there until their season is over. which is why (barring injury) he’ll be called up at the end of the year for a taste. we’ve done it before

Not sure, but if his junior team makes the playoffs(which is probably) and they win a round, it looks like their season will extend out past the end of the pro season.

I'm thinking he get's a few games early. That would depend on how good he looks, but also perhaps, how good Mueller looks.

Entry level contracts are weird. They're super cheap for 3 years, but if you play less than a certain number of games in the pros (12?) they get bumped back by a year. So playing Smith for more than that number of games would "cost" the Devils a year on his ELC.

I personally don't think it should be any consideration at all, but I think I'm in the minority on that.

I *think* that technically call-ups from juniors are allowed in some very specific instances like emergency situations, but there's a limit on how long that can last.

Generally though, if a player goes to juniors they stay the whole season. Once their season is over, they'll sign a PTO with our AHL team and join them for the end of the season/playoffs.

In regards to the 9 games, you can still send them back after the 10th game, it just gets the ball rolling on the ELC. This is what happened to Matteau in 2013. Ideally you want to push back on triggering that ELC until the player becomes a contributor, since as mentioned by @Blackjack they are very cheap deals.

You also don't have to play 9 games in a row, if a player is scratched that game doesn't count. It's the player's 9 games, not the team's 9 games. His 9th game of the season could be in November. But of course it's not advisable to keep a young player sitting in the press box that long when they could be playing and developing somewhere else.

I think Smith was one of our best players last night. His skating is so smooth to watch and he has great hockey sense. He did one big mistake in third period when he lost puck in own defensive zone and Buffalo player got breakaway. Otherwise he played very well and made really good choices with puck. I can't wait to see him play in preseason games.

I felt he was more tripped up when Thompson went for the puck, which is why he went down on his ass and the breakaway happened.
