I have this weird feeling he starts the season in NJ. Castron said he was super determined to make the team and from everything I've heard it sounds like he has the skills and character to pull it off. I'm looking forward to camp/prospects game/preseason.
I think it's more likely he doesn't play a single game in a Devils jersey this season, because he's an 18 year old defense prospect without a single pro game under his belt.
Yup.
I think he spends a season or two(more likely two or more) in Binghamton before being called up, imo.
Is he even playing in Binghamton this year? I would think not?
Yeah, that's what I thought. No, juniors or the NJD
The team we drafted him from.Sorry everyone. I said Binghamton because I mistakenly associated that with where young devils draft picks play prior to being called up.
So to prevent that mistake from happening again, can someone tell me where a player such as Ty would go if he does not qualify for the Main Team as of yet?
@Devils Dominion said juniors.
What exactly is "juniors"?

The CHL is really the umbrella organization under which the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL reside. The CHL, OHL and QMJHL where primarily underage North Americans play until they get called up to the pros. .
The CHL, OHL and QMJHL where primarily underage North Americans play until they get called up to the pros. I assume you've heard of the nine-game rule where said players get to audition for nine games at the NHL level before their teams have to decide to keep them or send them back - well it's in place to protect the junior leagues from poaching of talent. Players playing with juniors teams can't just go to the AHL unless they get signed to professional tryout contracts after their junior season is over with.
That last part is similar to college players who have to play out their college season before pro teams can sign them though in that case they can either send them to the AHL or right to the NHL. A lot of college players that sign after the season do get enticed to sign with NHL service time to start the clock toward FA a la Santini and Wood.
Okay thanks.
Now I fully understand.
I wasn't too familiar with how things worked in that regard except for the 9-game rule you mentioned.
So how long you think he'll spend down there until he's called up?
Not sure, but if his junior team makes the playoffs(which is probably) and they win a round, it looks like their season will extend out past the end of the pro season.pretty sure if he starts down there, he stays down there until their season is over. which is why (barring injury) he’ll be called up at the end of the year for a taste. we’ve done it before
Okay thanks.

I think Smith was one of our best players last night. His skating is so smooth to watch and he has great hockey sense. He did one big mistake in third period when he lost puck in own defensive zone and Buffalo player got breakaway. Otherwise he played very well and made really good choices with puck. I can't wait to see him play in preseason games.
