He was involved in the first goal but was not credited an assist. So a 3 point night in a blowout.
I paid attention to his positioning and he is ALWAYS on the right side of the puck. A few times he hesitated in the o zone to make sure he had his assignment right and got into better position. On one play he stopped pursuing the puck and skated back to the middle of the O zone to cover for the pinching D, recognized the Denmark breakout after Canada turned the puck over and hustled back to negate a 2 on 1. He even coordinated where the Dman should go as he checked the other forward.
He effectively boxed out players in front of both goals and was instrumental in his lines' breakouts
This type of play was exactly what Chayka commented on. Fantastic positioning and smarts in all 3 zones.
I think this is the type of thing that Chayka is craving in players.
#1: they won't go off-script when it comes to where to be on the ice
#2: self-recognition of what to fix and if he is asked to do something different in terms of assignment or role, he does it. Like playing as the screener in front of the goalie. Not saying he is built for it, but his positioning sense makes him a candidate to do it properly, even if not the biggest guy to take up space
I think we are going to be much happier with him than we realize and remember that prior to 2015, these weren't picks that Chayka had final say on. The NFL and NBA often have times when this wasn't the pick of that particular front office, so moving some of those players out isn't unfounded in other leagues. So far, Chayka has had complete control over the following 1st round picks: Keller, Chychrun, POJ, and Hayton. Now, he could have had another option to play with in the #7 OA pick in 2017, but I like what he did in getting a quality C in Stepan (he is much better than the comments on these boards make him out to be) and what seems to be a quality goalie in Raanta (stats are great, but health is the primary issue).
