Let's hope rent and mortgage payments are temporarily suspended for next 2 months. So no one makes their payments. It is a temporary measure as we stop da clock sort of speak. Everything then resumes as normal in 3rd month.

Some people, my landlord in Canada, though, I am in Korea at the moment and my Cdn apartment is awaiting my return, my Cdn landlord, owns 2 buildings one of which live in, with 8 units, I think, about 6 or 7 grand a month, not sure (minus the expenses etc) , that is her pension income (to my knowledge), so, what does she do if we don't have to pay her our rent?

Visitors still allowed at SB. Had a difficult covid intubation yesterday with no links to outside cases.

Isnt a concern if the tables are not clean, that the virus will spread?

Another topic,
I was just thinking about online classes. Lets say that schools have online classes for the rest of the school year. And it works out well. What if that trend makes teachers more obsolete and make governments realize they could cut costs a lot by laying off more teachers to save money. Perhaps software could be made to mark grades other than essays. Reason I mentioned it is that some brick and mortor stores are worried that the majority of people will online shop when a shutdown happens. Studies done on people who started online shopping usually remain online shoppers. Same thing could apply to online schooling.

Are her properties mortgaged?

If everyone gets a mortgage holiday (not free mortgage payments) she would too.

People would still owe rent and mortgage payments but they would be delayed.

Rent is tougher because people could stiff the landlord and move out ... I remember used to be first and last month on renting, but I think some areas changed the rules/laws on that.

I'd think if you are a good, long term tenant, the landlord would be amiable.

If you're a piece of crap, maybe not.

You would hope they clean tables between visits.

...

More private schools would open, and parents would then use them for their childcare while they work. It isn't just about schooling, parents drop off their kids and go to work.

In Alberta each child is given a voucher for schooling.

You can use the voucher at public schools or private schools. Obviously, it is only a small portion of the cost for private schools.

She won't have to pay her mortgage payment either. So it is a temporary freeze. If she has no mortgage on her 2 properties then she will have to rely on whatever the province of Ontario does for small business owners. Which quite frankly so are quite a few of us. We are not subject to EI payments because we don't pay into it. We will likely get screwed. But people are going to get screwed here.

Let's hope we can stop da virus and stop it fast. I do not support we are gonna have to wait 1.5 years to get a cure and vaccine. To me that can't be. We MUST get it much quicker. I think the powers that be know this too. Da world economies can't go that long in this state. Our health care systems can't go that long in this state. Quite frankly it is not sustainable. Maybe we have to resort to what china did. I don't like it myself but it worked. Stop everything except healthcare, groceries and pharmacies. Be damned with da supply chain. Stop it at all costs.

I think the trials for the drug are going to be the time munchers.

If they rush a drug and then find out later there are a few side affects there'll be long list of lawsuits, example 1976 Swine Flu shots.

My dad is in South America at the moment and he made prepaid cheques for the landlord for 3 months earlier. Problem is he is going to wait out the virus and remain there but he owes money by the first of April since he was going to return close to the end of March.

He asked if I could pay the rent under my name using cheques under my chequing account and would pay me back. Is it ok to pay rent under my name? Would I have to contact the manager? If the unit number hopefully thats enough but I may need to take other actions.

Looks like a crisis taken under control with the express purpose/need to shift the paradigm. It's a large wealth transfer scheme across the globe caused by; or coinciding with a Virus that has a lot of mixed messaging around it - from typical to slightly more deadly all the way to bio weapon. As the central banks are printing money at taxpayers expense to bailout the system, main-street wealth, pension funds etc are being decimated. The supply chain is still broken, the people are being told to stay home (I assume while they evaluate or begin to implement a "new deal") for the meantime and for "safety and security". The next collapse will likely be the housing market as people start losing jobs in droves and that's where helicopter money from the sky will be showered on the people. Small business' will likely not survive this process unless they provide a service in demand.

The scale of what is happening now has never before been seen. From what I can see, life is about to completely change for all of us. That could be for the better or for the worse. It just all depends on the leadership of the day.

Its all written in the end of days. All of it.

What's the hold-up Justin.

The hold-up is that there are priorities, such as taking the right steps to work on the health of Canadians, ton ensure that more people don't enter the country with the virus, to ensure that what we can do moving forward, we do..... and this is a moving target.

Next will be the Financial steps... and they are sweeping and complex.... it's going to take time, and it should take time, to get this right, not create a bigger financial mess, and make the right decisions...

Maybe there's a legal guy here better to answer that question.

My non-legal opinion is that if you went to the landlord and gave him a cheque for the rent, and he provided you a receipt for the rent for the unit in question ...

Ok thanks for replying. I thought you were knowledgeable about the tenancy act/ rent rules based on how you answered a previous poster. Looks like I will need to spend some time on the internet researching. Dont want to pay and have issues later. Maybe I could get him to bank transfer and ask him to talk with the manager over the phone. Who knows? I will try to get this sorted out.

GTA or the UK
I live north of Toronto - I had to drive into the city on Saturday night to visit someone; I've never had such a quiet, easy drive into the city. On a Saturday night as well.

What is there to discuss. Are we going to do what we say? or is all this a bunch of BS. It is real simple. Make everyone who is not working WHOLE today through EI. The cost is whatever the cost is? Too many politicians talking in general terms here. Now lets get $$$ out to people who need it. If you are not working today because you are a server then file for EI now and get setup to be paid on Friday. If you make $75,000 per year then get payments out at exact rate less taxes. The more BSing around that goes on here makes everyone think there is a ton of more BS going on here. Do what you say. Don't say we are supporting everyone and then keep current EI system da same. I guess we will see soon as pressure mounts. Hopefully we don't have to wait until our kids can't make rent in April. and then our kids are calling us to help out with their rent. Folks get some liquidity for yourself and your kids. The feel good talk is on us. Let's see if it is REAL.

Are people thinking the government is going to pay them their current wages?

How about just doing max EI tax free for everyone, whether laid off or not?

Good old socialism.

Probably take an equity loan against the property and hope that they can apply the amount against any government breaks that come forward.

She likely has CPP as well.

I live in BC, so, I don't know what BC gov would give her, or small business owners, but, it's seems unfair to say, put rents on hold for 2 months, and if you depend on those rents to live, well, whatever they get is the way it is.
