Even early into the pandemic I remember seeing studies that showed that the economies that recovered fastest from the Spanish Flu were the ones that took put in place the earliest and most aggressive measures. Obviously that was 100 years ago and the situation is not quite the same, but that article certainly indicates that a similar pattern may be emerging here.

I imagine that it's going to be extremely tough to study those effects this time though since this pandemic won't just end naturally, it will be snuffed out by vaccines. Different countries are going to get different vaccines at different times. A developing country that might be handling the pandemic relatively well right now, might not actually recover quickly simply because the pandemic might last longer there than in a wealthier country simply due to not having immediate access to a vaccine.

You can't even use the Spanish flu for Covid. Times are completely different being the size of population and ease of travel compared to back then.
This is uncharted territory. Small business is much more pronouced this go around. Times should suggest the impact should be far worse.

the supreme court ruled cuomo’s restrictions on religious gatherings unconstitutional 5 hours ago. just saying, some of the constitutional scholars here that sounded very confident yesterday may need to brush up on their rights, i have my finger on the pulse of this stuff

They didn't "rule", they granted an injunction until the case could be heard. And, the restriction is likely too narrow on only churches.

Maybe sit this one out ...

When in reality that generation was rife with communist and socialist programs leaned towards bettering the collective “we” and sacrificing for the country.

I never thought I would see a person who is ostensibly American referring to internment camps as "bettering the collective 'we' and sacrificing for the country," but I guess there's a first for everything.

Interesting take considering that's not at all what he was talking about. This is almost as random as the Nazi comments from the other day.

It also has nothing to do with the thread topic, so wonder if this one will be left up or not.

Ehh after some reading I’m a little more apprehensive about mRNA vaccines than I was like, yesterday.

The digital health pass would include a passenger’s testing and vaccine information and would manage and verify information among governments, airlines, laboratories and travelers.

“Testing is the first key to enable international travel without quarantine measures. The second key is the global information infrastructure needed to securely manage, share and verify test data matched with traveler identities in compliance with border control requirements,” Alexandre de Juniac, IATA CEO, said in a statement on Monday.

I can afford many airline tickets but I refuse to own a phone.

Then as I said, a work around. Physical Card probably. They do that with people who don't drive, an ID Card. Or simply your lab results proving vaccination and/or a recent negative test. Maybe at the airport.

What exactly did you read?
mRNA stuff was discontinued as treatment for other ailments (kidney diseases and cancers) due to the severe side effects. But they were in significantly higher dosages than the vaccine will be.

There seems to be some concern though on whether an mRNA vaccine can erroneously trigger autoimmune disorders, or possibly cancer cell growth, though I didn’t dig into how. No evidence it does, just something one could theoretically do.

This was all gleaned from wikipedia and I didn’t check sources.

Still if I had the choice and all other things being equal I’d prefer a live attenuated vaccine. If that’s the right term.

Hmmmm, wiki is better than people credit for, but at the same time tough to make a decision like this based off of info from there. There's always going to be a risk, it's all about comparing it to traditional vaccines which carry a lot of the same theoretical risks but are essentially nil.

It's a risk for sure, but we usually don't wait for 20-30 year follow ups on new medications or prior vaccines either. Most people just viscerally react differently if their doctor offers them the "newest and best antibiotic" versus the "newest and best vaccine". I get it though, vaccines are sort of weird.

And the "regular" type of vaccines are live attenuated (live virus that's been prevented from replicating), inactivated (dead), or conjugate (a chunk of dead virus). Developed nations use combinations of all three for routine vaccinations.

Was also curious how contract tracing occurs with no phone as well.

Just like scientific studies that are individual report - it's not trustworthy AT ALL. Now I believe football players have to wear trackers, but standard tracing is legit just the honor system. f***ing pointless because reality is we will never see full truth. Never happens.

I'm confused as to what this means?

And for the tracing, it can help on the individual level. But yeah, it won't really help on any sort of a population level unless people are more forthcoming (of which I'm doubtful) or it's made more involuntary (of which I'm even more doubtful).
