First of all, the contract tracing right now in Alberta is very poor. A lot of the transmission we aren't even sure where it originated.

I think it's a fair thing to ask ourselves as a society, why are we cool with closing schools but leaving bars, restaurants, and churches open? I have a problem with that. I don't want to see any business close but this is pandemic and certain things need to be done to control the spread
I have a problem punishing people who are following the rules and adhering to the protocols....should a bakery or bike shop be closed because of private indoors gatherings?
school shouldn't be closed, but what they're doing is a decent compromise IMO by switching to online learning for 6 weeks

Lastly, reading all these comments, I'm wondering how many of you have a partner working in ICU right now. Well, I do. This pandemic has dominated my husband's life for the last eight months and it's getting worse. What about his mental health ? What about our nurses and other health care workers?

The Kenney govt reacted far too slowly and they deserve criticism.
which province should Alberta be more like? cases are skyrocketing everywhere

To stop riling up their political base and stop pointing fingers at every decision made.

That's literally the job of the opposition. It's certainly all Kenney did when roles were reversed and why he employs so many "issues managers" now.

Again: we have no idea if private indoor gatherings are the main culprit, at least not from a data standpoint.

I think their solution for schools is a home run actually. The older children who can still reasonably learn remotely get four weeks of remote learning and they are of the age where parental supervision isn't necessary if parents need to still attend work. The younger children who don't get as much from remote learning and would have needed parental supervision if sent home still get in-person classes minus one week. This allows for a 6 week circuit break for the older children and 3 weeks for the younger children (including a full two weeks post-Xmas to allow enough time for people to determine if they picked up the virus at any Christmas function) while not really diminishing their actual access to education significantly.

This should also relieve a bit of pressure on transportation and possibly resource management as teachers who have been instructed to isolate but aren't symptomatic may be able to assist a bit still and have the few extra resources at school focussed towards the younger half of the school system population.

That was the most innovative solution I've seen that recognizes the specific needs of students, the schools, the transportation department and their parents all at the same time. Will it really help, that remains to be seen, but I think it's well thought out. It even gives teachers a few days to implement which wasn't the case with the last shutdown of schools which was announced on a Sunday effective immediately.

I have no clue what Kenney did pre pandemic. What I do see now, during a pandemic, is difficult decisions being made to cater to public needs in a health crisis. Maybe Notley can calm down on questioning some very solid moves that the current leadership has made and ensure her political base complies with those changes. To me she sounds like she's henpecking any decision being made for the good of all citizens of this province. And I don't give a shit if I'm right or wrong according to anyone else. Just saying what I'm seeing through a different perspective than many people here have. I've seen posters on this site give more quality feedback on the opposing view than Notley has FFS. (I'm not swearing at you BTW lol)

no but if this is like every other virus in the history of mankind, large indoor gatherings are the main culprit

hence the "cold and flu" season

Well there's a few factors there, including temperatures and humidity, but workplaces are another disease vector as anyone who has ever worked in an office or retail environment can attest.

There's no mask mandate for one. Refusal to use the federal app.

The ICU doctors have been sounding the alarm since October and it took them how long to actually employ any restrictions measures?

mask mandate is in Edmonton and Calgary though, the 2 biggest hotspots which is key
as for contact tracing, is the federal app working well in other provinces? I know the Alberta app is a joke

I appreciate that POV, but I simply can't get mad about a politician doing what any politician in her shoes would do, which is rile up the base and focus on government missteps (of which there have been many). The last thing any politician wants to do is give your opponent credit when you know any positive thing you say will be thrown back in your face come election time. Is it ideal? No, but it is what it is.

:thumbu: Man I can’t believe that people actually believe that will all the experts know about viruses like Covid that they would still post something like this.

Groups of people indoors, consistently in close quarters for hours at a time with no ventilation...yeah that won’t cause a virus to spread from one person to another.

someone posted a model a week or so ago that very clearly shows how a house gathering would spread the virus. Was quite simple and informative. If you weren’t able to understand it I could try to find it for you if you’d like. I used it to explain to my 12 year old why we won’t be having all the cousins together at Baba’s house this year and it made perfect sense to him.

that is seriously the lamest excuse I have ever seen for justifying someone acting like a shitty human being.

I've been a big critic of the Alberta App since the beginning, but I did reinstall onto my work phone recently, and it is definitely less of a resource hog now and as such I think it could possibly help us. Unfortunately it's original roll out was so bad, I don't think anyone wants to give it a fair shake so they should just move on and accept the federal app as they'll never be able to undo how badly the original roll out went.

Given opposition parties have no power in a majority government situation, what do you expect to see from the leader of the opposition in terms of concrete action?

I’d prefer if there wasn’t 24/7 campaigning going on, and that parties acknowledged when some good is being done by the other party, and try to work with them for the common good. And this goes for all parties. I know it’s a utopia that will never exist, but it would make for a better province/country, and also wouldn’t have so many of its fellow citizens turning against each other because they are programmed by their leaders to hate everything the opposition says or does.

In the NDP hive they actually did a body count of all the people that died since MIA Premier was last seen and holding lack of action responsible for those deaths. I mean thats what they are clearly inferring and some even stating. Because angry rabble is what they do. Its reprehensible, and a lot of people noting it.

Quite clear going on some of their MLA twitter accounts where the MIA thing came from. Really vile that they would take somebody that had a contact, in isolation, and fault him for it during a global pandemic. Theres some bad karma to be served there. REally I thought it might be some of the more angry individuals on twitter running with the MIA thing and bringing it around. Its the actual opposition party stooping to this. I was actually surprised. Which shows how bad its gone.

It goes beyond just partisan, it goes into basic decency. Don't make political game over peoples lives ending. Don't make political game over people being exposed to the pandemic of a century and screaming at them to appear. There is no quality of mercy to be found.
I'm surprised she didn't hold a presser from the morgue, and have some bodies wheeled out, with sobbing relatives as a backdrop. Nothing like shamelessly using some props to try to advance her position.

not good, for a Province that has the population that is about the same as the Calgary area. Makes you wonder if the strict lockdowns are unintentionally causing more social gatherings.

It's been just over a week since they locked down so even if there were more social gatherings and thus more spread, it probably wouldn't be turning up in the numbers yet.

You literally "liked" this post:

OK, which words specifically? After all, if I've said or implied that indoor social gatherings aren't a source of infections, it should be dead easy for you to provide it. but you can't because it's either yet another strawman or you simply lack basic reading comprehension skills.

You mean like at a restaurant, bar or casino?

So what you're saying is that the government's decisions here are being guided by incomplete or flawed data?

Casinos, bars and restaurants all have social distancing measures in place and have superior ventilation systems with larger spaces. The models I was referring to explained this, would you like me to find them for you so you can gain a greater understanding of how the virus spreads in different environments? If they were closed down it wouldn’t bother me much. But a complete lockdown on all businesses like you’re clamoring for doesn’t make sense then does it?

All decisions made by every government in the world since the pandemic started have been guided by incomplete data...unless you’re China and you just say whatever you want

But the strict lockdowns should be starting to show some results if small businesses are the super spreaders and not social gatherings like you’ve been saying.
