He was the guy who set the cop car on fire, which most accounts say began the "riot". I also believe he's the guy who spray painted the Lemieux statue.
The guy started a gofundme page to get a lawyer, and said "I'll turn myself in once I get $1500". Doesn't seem to be the brightest bulb out there.
Seems really weird to be able to tie a riot specifically to one kid and not, say, decades of police-community distrust, but hey, I haven't lived in Pittsburgh since the cops f***ed up so bad the DOJ had to oversee the department for a while.
Speaking of riots, though, and keeping this away from politics per se, here's a really interesting historical tidbit from the Velvet Revolution-- the months long demonstration/riot that brought down the socialist government here. By most accounts, what really kicked the protests into high gear was the death of a student Martin Šmid (sort of like John Smith in English), who decades later, we all now know didn't actually exist. I've read some arguments by some of my colleagues that it was actually an attempt by the Secret Police to intimidate the students into obedience and to encourage them to break off the protest but it backfired wildly.
One respected historian even claims it was an attempt by certain elements within the Czechoslovak law-enforcement community to bring down the regime from the inside (since they knew first hand how untenable it was).
Also, people always think the revolution was peaceful, but it really wasn't until the Slovak ironworkers unions started showing up to the rallies with pieces of rebar and sledgehammers. Can't imagine why things calmed down after that.
