Ideally neither but I am more referring to playoffs. Of course there will be injuries in reg season and 25 players will get PT.

Btw just thought of another possible return for Murray. Brandon Saad. Hes a UFA next season and the Hawks need a goalie. His cap is 6 mil. So we would have to def move JJ.

But that aside if we really are going all in then why not? Saad can play either wing. Do we put him in the top 6 or do we make life much better for McCann at 3C with Saad and Poulin as his wingers? Good news is they can figure that out as the season goes on. Maybe Kap doesnt fit with Sid. Maybe Poulin or Saad is a better fit. The fact that just about all of our wingers now can move up and down the lineup is important.

Guentzel - Crosby - Kapanen
Zucker - Malkin - Rust
Saad - McCann - Poulin
Tanev - Blueger - Sceviour/Simon/WBS winner
I mean if you get Saad and mention he can play both wings, seems like the better choice would be to let him be RW and let the rookie get comfortable in the NHL at his natural LW position.

Also, I'd essentially want to move Murray, Pettersson, and JJ, not all at once, I mean if we could, amazing, but likely not.

But if it was the Hawks, I would possibly try to do Murray + Pettersson for Saad + our own 2nd round pick, Matej Chalupa (you know DAMN WELL WHY) and their 4th round pick.

Then send JJ + 2nd to literally ANY team. ANY TEAM.

If it is Murray and Pettersson I would rather get DeBrincat in return.

And forget the rest...since IDK who Matej Chalupa is anyway. I would also rather have DeBrincat over us being able to move JJ. As tempting as that offer is.

Without exaggerating or anything - it is what it is. I get it's a game and a business. We control nothing. I do not know Patric personally but can only speak to what i see on tv. I have a lot of respect for that man. I really do. I will joke the rest of the thread that i'm massively angry. I'm not. It's just a sport. It's disappointing watching what JR has done to this team since 2017-18. It really is.

So for me... I just let my foot off the gas a bit on how committed i am to watching every game. Similar to the Steelers. I'll do my best to catch it, but if a family member wants to go for a walk or someone wnats to play some tennis - i'll catch highlights later. If I'm invited out to dinner, I won't DVR and stay up til 1-2am. I'll just catch highlights. Then i'll party with all of you guys here during GDTs when I can because this forum can be a lot of fun.

It's disappointing but oh well. Life goes on. Family and loved ones are more important.

Can't say that I'm not angry. It is however - like you say - a game and nothing more. There's a level to the anger. Most of it for me comes from the utterly ridiculousness of how things have been handled. How for a second Rutherford still has a job is beyond most of us. It's so confusing that anger is what seems to stem up. We have Sid and Geno. We have Letang. We were gifted Guentzel. We have 3 NHL goalies. Yet - we have no vision of what to assembe....all the while giving out every draft pick we have and term to bottom barrel guys to screw us in the future. We're still stuck thinking that we have to just get youth and speed with no plan as to how to use any of it....while plenty of teams chalk full of veterans are doing damn well in the past 3 playoffs.

What I agree with and more is the commit level. The media influence/politics/pandering of the past few years has kept me from many sports - and it's infection in hockey has pushed me completely out of the covid cup and going in to next year. I figured a break was overdue anyway - as I've got plenty to deal with in my career and young family. Next season? It was tough enough to follow this team over the past 2 seasons when everyone on this board knew our shortcomings. Our sports journalists knew them. We failed to address them and thought hell - with Sid and Geno we have a puncher's chance. But we don't. We've been throttled two years in a row come playoffs and that trend has no reason to turn around. We're older - the rest of the league has adapted - and 2016 is in the rear-view. Why should I spend the hundreds and hundreds required to watch every game from Florida and read every article to a journey that's as predictable as cement drying? I think the break from hockey will need to continue well past this coming season - be the average fan they seem to cater to...just read some stats and catch a game once or twice a year in the background.

Yup
Gonchar apparently hadnt been full time lately. Pens wanted him full time. Seems he didnt wanna go full time.

He was supposed to fix JJ. Relieved him of his very simple duty - brought in another defensive specialist. Also gave this new coach a new partner for JJ. We will go to no end to prove that JJ can be here - even if it means constructing an entire roster and system of play around him.

The full-time rumors were out last Summer when he allegedly turned down Recchi's position the season before. But the guy submitted himself to the Covid cup so I'm not sure how much "full time" you could require?

Was he there for every practice? If not, there's your answer.

There's no need to reach for conspiracy here.

Lol there's virtually no chance that package lands Cat. We'd seriously have to offer up Guentzel and then they'd have to add that 2nd.

As a person who has been a resident of PA multiple times and also Florida as well I can assure you from personal experience there was a massive difference in my take home pay without Florida state income tax.

Google all you want but anyone who has lived in PA and also one is the other states such as Florida, Texas, Nevada, etc can back me up on this.

Residency matters.

The athlete tax is completely different. I know what you are talking about and I wasn’t referring to that.

Sorry, you are mistaken, residence is pretty much irrelevant, at least from the perspective of the state from which the income is earned.

As a CPA who has actually prepared tax returns for 35 years, I am not googling, I am speaking from practical experience and working knowledge while drinking whiskey without breaking a sweat.

Your anecdotal PA v FL experience doesn't matter, no offense, and I don't doubt your conclusion nor do I NOT appreciate your position. But you fail to understand the big difference: Of course tax is less for you in your "take home pay" in FL v PA. If you work in Florida, and earn significant PA-source income you WILL pay PA tax. Like every NHL player. If you live in FL and don't have PA income, then you have no state tax exposure. Athletes who live in NV, WA, FL or TX pay non-resident taxes on income earned in taxable states. Google non-resident state income tax and get back to me if you care to discuss this further.

I've not read any of this thread yet and likely don't plan to. But I wanted to get my thoughts in the thread so they're documented.

I totally understand why they moved Hornqvist. The team needed a shake up trade and he was one of the very few candidates. He's also older and on a not-so-great contract. But I'm certainly sad to see him go.

The return though? I'm not too thrilled about it but I'm also not super down on it.

Matheson still has potential and could actually be a steal. Hopefully Reirden and, should he come back in some capacity, Gonchar can coach him into being a new-Niskanen as others have already mentioned. Big risk here with that contract, though.

Sceviour is a serviceable bottom sixer. His naturalstattrick info for the last four seasons have him defined as "forward". But his most recent season has him as a "struggling top 6 shutdown forward". Seems like he'll do a good job in our bottom six. Also, he had a PDO of 100.8 while getting 75% d-zone starts last season. That's fairly impressive. Anyway, I suspect he'll be gone mid-season or won't be coming back for the 21/22 season.

Overall: meh

Hornqvist will be a player who is always a warrior that the Pens have lacked for decades. But he is 34 and was signed to be that as long as he could. GMJR is in the fix his fixes now and as he has been here now for awhile, it is clear he is a ticking time bomb as he makes moves that just are for now without consideration of future thinking. what I do like is the fact the recognized the D on the left side was just good. so they traded for a player who actually has skills. I didn't like the Petts extension for that amount as it was Olli all over again. Move or buy out JJ, get a decent return for Murray picks or prospects and or McCann and have cap room to solidify the third line. Marino, hopefully Maniscalco, can be that young RD pair that gives the Pens a long term set on the right side.

1. How is there not a petition to have GMJR removed from his position? I ask this seriously. I’m quite certain it would be filled out by quite a lot of people...
2. Gonchar is no longer part of the team - multiple posters have mentioned him as the Matheson saviour.
3. The last locker room shake up deal that GMJR made sent us downhill (Hagelin). This is not at all the shake up that was needed after the recent embarrassments. It should have been Sully, JJ and 2-3 vanilla players. How do you trade the most energetic/devoted player on the team when claiming players are too satisfied?
4. I honestly hope that Matheson is serviceable, if not, then GMJR not only crippled what was left of Sid and Geno but also the beginning the rebuild which was likely to start 4 years from now.

If anyone were to start that petition, I would sign.

It got worse!?! How did it get worse? Remember when we were talking maybe the Panthers were retaining or taking Johnson? Now the Pens took back MORE salary for a non-descript, 31-year-old 4th line winger?

So on a unrelated note, is there some form or initiation or something to officially join the FIRE JR camp?

1. Yes, JR has completely lost the plot since long ago.
2. Gonchar probably never really reclaimed anyone in a real sense. It's more of an urban myth of a cult following.
3. Yes it will not go down well in the locker room, but it won't really have an impact since the locker room is not good enough to play winning hockey to start with.
4. His impact good or bad won't really matter as long as Johnson is there. I've asked for a rebuild of the blueline for 3-4 years and it's still shit. Matheson won't move the needle good or bad in that regard. It's just that know we have even more of bland, expensive defenders. We're gonna roll with 10 of them next year.
Extra bonus - Same headcoach

JR has retained almost the full roster and kept the headcoach. Some red plastic chairs were exchanged for some blue ones. You can't see it because Internet, but I'm brimming with excitement for how different next year's on ice product will be from previous year's. If you could see my face, you'd be excited too.

Overreaction to the departure of Hornqvist is crazy. Like some people legitimately think that this kills our chances and means the end of an era???? He had negative value for us, gonna repeat it again, NEGATIVE VALUE. This is all business, f*** the emotions, nostalgia and personal feelings. He was an injury prone 34 years old player signed for 3 more years, making 5.3M who didn't even have a role here. Great person with great heart who helped us a lot in the past. Give him a standing ovation for full 5 minutes when he plays against us. I would stand and clap and sing his name for all of it. But he was absolutely the right option to go. I am not gonna shed a tear, this is how it goes. We traded an actual negative asset for what might or might not be a negative asset. Not thrilled but not at all upset. People need to calm down, this is not personal life, nostalgia has no place in business.

Thanks for everything, Bengan. Enjoy retirement in Florida. :thumbu:

People clamoring for JR to get fired need to realize one thing. The owners approve of this. If they hadn't, they would've stepped in at some point. There ain't shit we fans can do. Petitions does nothing. The only thing that matters would be to not spend money on the team on a grand scale, not 100 fans on a message board, but tens of thousands in the Pittsburgh area, including sponsors. You know, make an actual difference where it counts. In that case, they might sell... and the grass isn't always greener on the other side regardless.

First let me say this. Hornqvist isnt a negative value as a player, just has a contract that will soon be negative value.

Matheson is also not a negative value player in a vaccuum. Just his contrat is a negative value.

The good news is only one has the chance to turn their contract into a value and even if you believe it unlikely, thats Matheson.

Its a big swing for sure.

The probelm is that none of this matters as long as we have JMFJ

Are there any of those fancy chrts out there that show the first few years of Matheson before he nosedived?

Id be interested to see if they were actually good or assumed good because he was 22 and projecting improvement?
