Schroeder has 2 assists in his first 7 games (likely 3 after they do stat recount). Hodgson had 3 points in his first 11 games last season (having had another 20 games of experience already), playing 5 of those on the 2nd line and being sheltered for all 11. Can't forget the difference in scoring between the two teams.
If there's no criticism it's because he's doing about as well as can be expected given his situation and the expectations.
Firstly, Schroeder is only about 4 months younger than Hodgson and Hodgson missed almost an entire year of development due to a severe back injury. So I am not sure if the correct comparison is Hodgson's performance last season. Perhaps there isn't a perfect comparison here....
Secondly, I think many people were not impressed with Hodgson's early production last year. It wasn't until later in the season that people started to get excited about his offensive potential. If Hodgson didn't improve on his offensive numbers as the year progressed, I think people would have felt much differently about his offensive potential. Even at the very beginning though, Hodgson showed glimpses of his offensive potential. We haven't seen these glimpses from Schroeder yet.
Ultimately though, I can't agree with your implication that Hodgson deserves more criticism for his defensive issues than Schroeder does for his offensive struggles. I think both should be approach similarly. As you astutely point out, 3 points for Schroeder in his first 11 games may not be too far off what our expectations for him should be. However, I would also contend that we shouldn't expect Hodgson to be good (or even average) defensively while anchoring Buffalo's first line (a line and team that has been struggling mightily defensively). Moreover, Hodgson was ill suited to be a shutdown third line centre on a Stanley Cup contending team at such a young age. Ironically, perhaps Schroeder probably would have been a more appropriate fit for that line last year and Hodgson would be a more appropriate fit on the Canucks this year.
