I don't think the Hall of Fame is in his future, unless he keeps ****ting out 100 pt seasons until he's 35. I just don't see that happening though.

He's been underrated his whole career, I don't see a bunch of old suits sitting around a table talking about him with grace. They'll bring up no cups, they'll bring up no MVPs, they'll bring up no trophy's.

If he keeps getting 100 points per season till his 35 season he will end up like 30th in points all time while playing in one of the lowest scoring eras ever. I would hope he would get in! Haha

That's very true, I just don't see him potting 100 pts a year. There's a chance he gets close again with this quick start this year, but eventually it's gonna cool off again, right?

BTW, I'll have to say this, I didn't realize that just crossing 1,000 pts puts in him some great company. Maybe it's the Gretzky thing that throws me off, felt like most HHOF (outside of a few) were well into the 1500 pts.

I was looking the other day and I'm curious if he can catch Bobby Clarke for the Flyers all time point leader.

My initial reaction was "no way" but then I actually started to look at the numbers and it's possible with some luck and good health. Assuming he goes around PPG this year, he would only need roughly 450 more points. If he's able to play until he's 40, he would only need to average 50 points a season from here on out. Definitely possible.

lol. I know, I was there.

But it took, what? 14 years to do it? I'm thinking that since the Flyers don't do anything quickly (example Mark Howe), Giroux's number might just not be worn.

You guys do realize that the Flyers have an unwritten rule about retiring #'s. Barry Ashbee notwithstanding; all the #'s retired are Hall of Famers and were not lifted to the rafters until after they were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Giroux if he stays healthy, has a lot more years to build his case for the HOF. A cup would help solidify it.

Yes, we are aware, but if a player basically sits at #1 or #2 spots in your all time records, but for some reason doesn't get into the HHOF, that's a pretty stupid rule.

I'm not 100% sure that Clarke was in the HHoF upon going to the Rafters... in fact, I'm almost 100% certain that he couldn't have been.

Clarke retired at the end of the 1983-84 Season to become GM, IIRC... I do know that he went fro Player directly to GM... they raised his number on November 15, 1984, just a little over a month into the Season following his Retirement... there is no way that the requirements of being Selected for the Hall would be anywhere near that short length -- what is it now?... 4? -- I'd assume the unwritten Rule idea arose after the first 4 Players were in there and there were none for a long time... and at that point, all but Ashbee was in the Hall... with #4 being a special case, the Theory was established... and that was after Clarke, Bernie and Barber were already up there... Clarke was up there before Induction... clearly.

That's my story ... and I'm sticking to it.

With that said... if Giroux broke all the major Scoring Records... how could they justify not retiring his Number?... If course, that certainly is a monumental 'IF'.

I have little to no doubt that Giroux will get his number retired by the organization if he continues to have productive seasons going forward.

If they don't win during Giroux's tenure here the organization will need something to get the fans to come to the stadium for special events since they can't celebrate '75 anymore.

While I don't disagree... I can't help but remember Propp' Number never has even though he ended up quite high in so many categories before he hung the skate up due to health... If G never catches Clarke... and can't catch Barber in Goals... do they then await the call from the Hall to retire #28?... Or just go for it?

Yeah, and I wonder if this is part of what drove the recent retirements in part; they need something more recent to celebrate, instead of events outside of living memory for most of the fanbase.

With Giroux getting two Assists, he has now tied Propp in assists... and passed the 700 Point mark.

He also reached #2 in PPP IIRC. I may be a bit off on that though.

After he passes Propp for Sole possession of #2 in Assists, he has only one more reachable goal to reach this Season... 3rd in GP... after that we are looking at a couple Seasons to move up the Charts in any category.

If Giroux would hang up his skates tonight, he would already have cemented his place as one of the all time Flyers Greats and have his name mentioned in the same sentences as Clarke, Barber, Propp, Macleish, Kerr, Lindros and Leclair as an elite All-Time Flyers Forward... as well as elite Flyers Players.

Onward and upward. :thumbu:

According to the NHL Statistical database, this was the first time in NHL history a team came back from a 4 goal deficit to tie a game in the final 10 minutes of the game

Giroux is the type of player who can lead a great team to a championship. Yet, his best years seems to be wasted by Hextall not having the balls to take that team to the next level and just "waiting and drafting". Fix the holes and compete while we have him, ffs. This team already has a lot of youth in the system anyway. We'll be fine in the future. Just improve the team and let Giroux have his chance. Believe me, when Giroux will regress, it will take ages before we find another gem like him. It's now or never. Where is Holmgren when we need him... make a Pronger type trade.

"Waiting and drafting" was indisputably the correct choice because it was the only way they'd ever have a chance at becoming a contender. It's only now that it's time to make moves to compete, but in previous years it would have been premature.

Could you just imagine what it would have been like to Draft Giroux BEFORE the Cap Era... and still Draft some of these Young Players... but as a Major Market Team with Deep Pockets and the ability and desire to spend and do whatever you could to be Perennial Contenders?

To have a Clarke or Holmgren as a GM who didn't have to worry about spending too much Capital... within reason, of couse.

We can assume that some of the Acquired Players may not have been able to be obtained due to Teams not having to move Players to ease Cap -- so maybe Jake or Simmer wouldn't be here -- but the Flyers have always Drafted well... when they had the Draft Selections... and then they could go after and obtain the JRs and Forsbergs and Lindroses of today.

Now just imagine a Team of Perennial Contenders surrounding Giroux.

Granted... we'd still probably be fumbling around for THE Goalie... but, even so....*sigh*

Giroux was a Player that was born too late for the Flyers to Draft while still able to supplement with bought Talent... He was Clarke's final Gift to us... as the Cap Era escorted Clarke to the exit door.

It's Time to get some Veteran Talent in here before G is gone, Hexy!!!!
