I get wanting to keep him around, but surely it could have been done much much cheaper than this
Sure, but Foligno's first mentorship lesson to Bedard is on the topic of contract negotiations.

Rule #1: Get yours.

Rule #2: See Rule #1.

The young Toronto Maple Leafs follow this strategy well.

They don’t want him at a lower price, they need to hit the cap floor.
They could hit the cap floor like Arizona did, by taking on LTIRs and other bad contracts that come with sweeteners.

Bruins overpaid Marty LaPointe to mentor Bergeron and Bergeron speaks very highly of the experience.

More teams with young studs should be doing this sort of thing. Just having *some vets* around isn’t it. Get the right ones and pay for it.

edit: They signed LaPointe BEFORE Bergeron was drafted, but the point still stands that Bergeron had a quality grown up to lean on... he even lived with him.
Same thing happened with Toews and Lapointe.

Good deal. Basically gets Perry's money. Cap is valuable but less so to the Hawks. They can spend a lot of it in retention but only so much.

They might as well overpay a few veterans to help their chances in the rebuild. They are by no means a lock to finish the rebuild quickly

You’re underestimating the impact a player like Foligno can have in the locker room during a rebuild, when a decent amount of players are just there collecting pay checks.

Obviously we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes and money certainly helps, but having vet leadership who wants to be part of the rebuild is important.
Yes which is why I said it’s not a shot at the Hawks. He’s in the perfect scenario where they’re basically paying him an obscene amount of money to be a father figure for these young guys.

His actual NHL ability is about 1/4th of what he’s being paid.

Maybe it is the reverse for you and you have the skill but.... :sarcasm:
In all seriousness, I hear you. It would be cool if my job paid even 10% extra for being well liked in the room.
Judging by my salary I’m neither liked nor skilled

Yeah we saw what happens when teams like Edmonton in the early 2010s don’t have these types of players around

At this point the $ doesn't matter to the Hawks and he’s obviously stepped up to be a solid mentor for Bedard on and off the ice.

He's tells good stories in the locker room and a good guy on/off the ice that defends Bedard. That's awesome that he gets paid for that.

The real trick to this is...finding "the right vets" who are actually willing to burn their last few years of NHL hockey puttering around as a mentor or glorified "on ice coach" for a really really bad team. There's a fine line between "mercenary" just in it for the money vs someone who actually takes real pride in that mentorship aspect and embraces the role.

Most of the time, if you even can find the right guys for it, you're going to get a combination of "completely over the hill" combined with "massively overpaid" to compensate them for wasting any last kicks at a Stanley Cup.

That's why it's ideal if you've actually got some veteran "Culture Carriers" in house, who have spent a long time with the organization and take some pride in the sweater. Even if they're just "role players", if they play the right way, and can set a great example for work ethic and how to operate as a "professional", that's worth having. Often worth more in the end than whatever mid-round pick you might be able to "sell" them for at some deadline in the end. Just to keep that "loyalty".

Though Chicago's decline just flew off a cliff, and guys like Toews just retired prematurely. So they're stuck with "improvising". Which looks like this. Which has also clearly been a "mixed bag" with their various swings on Veteran Mentors.

Anyway...good for Foligno taking the role seriously, and realizing that strong Intangibles never expire. Apparently.

On paper, this is probably one of the biggest overpayments we have seen relative to what the player might get on July 1st. He is playing a bigger role on the ice in Chicago because especially with the injuries, it was an AHL team.

Still, it makes sense. This contract along with all the overpaid veteran contracts they signed or acquired this past offseason is an investment in Bedard.

Everyone knows he’s overpaid, but it’s hardly a dent in the Hawks cap.
Everyone also knows that Foligno brings so much more to the room it’s hard to hate on anything about this deal

Isn't that when they went through all the captains exactly like foligno.

Smith moreau staios ference.

The Oilers captains were all terrible heart and grit guys lol
Staois, Smyth, Moreau we’re all gone by 2010 and Ference turned out horrible (although that may have also been because of Eakins being there)

So no.

Foligno just may be the most overpaid player over a three contract duration in recent memory. Every single contract more than double the value. Well done, Foligno.

Good person and character.

Interestingly after that he joined the Hawks and was doing the same thing. He was there for Keith, Seabrook, Sharp at first then the year Toews and Kane joined.

They are trying to do the same thing. And I know Eddie O praised having Lapointe there for the team in the past.
