Checkers dominate the 1st period, so naturally it's 1-1. For such a great road PP, they absolutely SUCK at home on it. Also, Crunch are one of the dirtiest teams I've seen in a long time...end of the first it's very obvious the refs have already lost complete control of the game, very little being called

Only one option.

Kill them.

Checkers dominate 40 min, let off the gas and implode in the 3rd, 3 unanswered goals went from up 3-1 to down 4-3, tied it on a shortie, then Forseberg pulled a Darling (again) and we lose 5-4

Management must really be pleased with that one-way contract he was awarded.

He’s certainly earning it with his stellar play in Charlotte.

Can somebody sum up quickly what in the good f*** happened at the end of the season last year where there was such incredible turnover on the Checkers? I mean why do other teams get to have an amazeballs prospect pool in the AHL and then we have it one year and then it goes away.

most of what we lost were older career AHLers, not an amazeballs prospect pool

We lost a lot of tweeners - guys who are great in the ahl but can’t quite hack it in the nhl. Many wanted to pursue that dream so left for organizations where they felt they had a better chance. Pretty sure they’re all right back in the ahl.

Here's who we lost from the Checkers and what they are doing now:

Poturalski: 25 years old, and has played 6 games this year with the AHL San Diego Gulls
Saarela: 22 years old, traded to Chicago, promptly sent down to the AHL. Then traded to Florida, promptly sent down to the AHL. Got 3 games in the NHL, did nothing and is back in the AHL
Necas: 20 years old, playing in the NHL on the Canes
Carrick: 25 years old, playing in the AHL for the San Jose Barracuda.
Gauthier: 22 years old, currently going between the Canes and Checkers
Shilkey: 25 years old, currently in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers
Roy: 22 years old, traded to LV, got a 7 game look on the 4th line when injuries hit, currently in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves
Brown: 27 years old, currently in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves
Renouf: 25 years old, currently in the AHL with the Colorado Eagles
Jurco: 26 years old, signed by Edmonton, but after doing nothing in 12 games was sent down to the AHL and is playing for the Bakersfield Condors.
Nastasiuk: 24 years old, currently playing in the AHL with the San Antonio Rampage
Robertson: 28 years old, currently playing in Austria.
Fleury: 23 years old, currently playing in the NHL with the Canes
Didier: 26 years old, currently playing in the AHL with the Providence Bruins
Tokarski (Goalie): 30 years old, currently playing in the AHL with W-B/Scranton Penguins

So of the guys "lost" the only ones that could even be considered prospects (22 and under) are Saarla, Necas, Gauthier and Roy. Two of those are with the Canes and two are in the AHL.

NOTE: I left out guys like McKegg and Maenalanen since they spent the end of the season and playoffs with the Canes, but they aren't prospects.

Thanks for breaking it down. Now it doesn't sound too bad. I just remember reading threads where people were like "holy shit, all the Checkers from last year are gone"

I am a little concerned about player development on a team that suddenly sucks though.

I'm just thankful we have Dundon and not Karmanos in this moment. If Karmanos was still the owner, they would've dumped the contract attached to some long-shot prospect because real cash.

Well, most of those guys that we care about developing were on the team last year and got a chance to "learn how to win" so I don't think it's necessarily abad thing that they now have to figure it out with less talent and taking on a bigger role...the likes of Bean, Gauthier, Geekie, Kuokkanen, Ned, Mattheos (playoffs), and McKeown (although not sure how much more developing there will be with him). Playing a bigger role on the team now that other guys are gone could conceivably help their development in the long run. The only two other guys we care about developing that weren't with the team last year are Luostarinen and Priskie.

Whenever I watch the Checkers I notice Lorentz in a good way. His skating, while not great, doesn't seem below average this year. Given his size, I think he could be part of the 4th line rotation next season.

Best thing about Kaski is that he has another season of waiver exemptions. So he has time to impress us and the Borg.

He should also be exempt from the expansion draft too. Seems like they’re trying to hoard offensive minded RD (Kaski, Priskie, A Honka, the interest in J Honka) to maybe hedge their bets on re-signing Hamilton. Either way, nice to be rich in pick-movers, I doubt Hamilton goes anywhere, and the aforementioned prospects (outside of A Honka, too young) probably fight to the death for the 3rd pair RD spot next year.

Another point for Kaski, an assist, ppg for McCormick-5-0.

One thing I’ve noticed in these past 2 games, the Checkers’ best players Bean, Kuokkanen, Mckeown and Gauthier have really and noticeably been their best players.

Kuokkanen and Gauthier in particular look very assertive in the offensive zone as well as a bit of a Gauthier nasty streak lately...
