Hughes has been brutal to start this season, really truly awful. He will put it together. He is not great defensively, but better than he has shown so far this year.

Let’s keep in mind, with all that said, he has been PPG so far and 1 point away from leading the league.

Isn’t Hughes playing 3rd pairing tonight for the Canucks?

I'm really not near as big a fan of Chabot as most around here seem to be, and as a Canucks fans, it's hard to understate the sort of impact Hughes can have...But i'd still have to take Chabot here.

Imagine a PPG defenseman being regarded as "truly awful", by their standard.

Chabot, I see him as the better two-way defenceman.

Hughes, I see a young Tyson Barrie there, gonna put up good offensive numbers but is going to struggle in his own end.

Not sure Chabot’s competition is as tough as people are saying though.

So far this season he is being used in a shutdown role, just over half of his ES time is with the oppositions top lines after 4 games. (Matthews/Marner and Schiefele and Wheeler). In the past he hasn't matched up against top lines as often, it's been a progression.

Hughes is the next Barrie, Werenski, Green caliber offensive d-man white Chabot is a true two-way d-man that can carry a top pairing. Pretty crazy how the Sense went from prime Karlsson to having Chabot now.

You have to take in consideration Chabot's QoT... I mean look at the current defense. None of Sanderson, Brannstrom, JBD, Kleven, Wolanin, Zub, etc are in the line-up, it's only stop gap vets (admittedly Zaitsev looked surprisingly good so far)

Even at forward, most of the talent is pretty young and inexperienced and/or NOT in the lineup.

Compare who he had to feed the puck in 2018-19 vs 2019-20 and yo will understand why his production went down.

Finally, Ottawa probably has the worst GM/coaching combo in the league so I don't think it'll be easy for any player

Chabot will be recognized more fairly if/when there is finally more talent around him.

Hughes is off to a poor start but it’s a pretty small sample size. I would have picked him without much hesitation last season so he still at least warrants some consideration after six bad games. It’ll be interesting to see how fan interpretation changes if the Canucks got out of this strange funk they’ve been in. They all look so frustrated and it’s hard to believe they’re the same group as last year.

“Can’t trust Hughes in big minutes!1!1!1”

Wasn’t he just a near PPG defender in the playoffs, logging 25 + minutes a night on a team that knocked of the defending champs in a playoff series?

This place is so fickle it’s insane, it’s been 7 f***ing games calm the f*** down.

how is that a bad thing? Barrie has been a really good top-4 defenceman in the NHL for the past half decade.
People on these boards need to check their expectations of young players.
Considering Quinn Hughes as a rookie has been better than Tyson Barrie has been in his 10 NHL season I’d say it’s a horrible comparison.

Thanks. One play pretty much means nothing.

Quinn Hughes rookie season: 53 points 68 games

Tom Chabot 3rd season: 39 points 71 games

Maybe chabot is better defensively, but I think Quinn is going to be so good offensively from the back end that he will have a bigger positive impact on games.

Context needs to be applied to their situations. If you put Hughes on the lowly Sens and asked him to play 25 mins a night last season against top competition it would have been an absolute train wreck. Given the circumstances Chabot did exceptionally well.

25+ mins a night? You mean 22 mins a night and he barely stepped foot on the ice on the PK or in key defensive situations. Hughes is a great talent but he’s been put in extremely favourable situations in order to maximize his skill set, he’s far from an all around defenseman at this point in his career.

Well if you want to be exact he averaged 23:51 toi per game in the St Louis series and it would have been higher if they didnt blow out St Louis in game 6 where he averaged 5 minutes less than his usual.

and its not like Chabot plays PK either. They had Tanev/Edler/Benn/Myers PKing. You always put players in positions to succeed. Hes not being sheltered in anyway whatsoever. Its obvious Chabot is a better all around Dman, but lets not pretend Hughes plays 3rd pairing minutes at even strength. He plays top pairing minutes at even strength.

I disagree, both are similar players, offensive defence men that struggle in their own zone, they Both don’t play the the PK and aren’t expected to, because that’s not the players they are.

Development isn’t linear. Quinn Hughes looks close to a finished product. I mean how much can you improve on a close to PPG season as a defenceman?

He may develop a defensive game later in his career but i’m doubtful.
