One thing is certain, I will not be adding more channels to my cable bill in order to watch more hockey.

Ottawa unless it becomes a disaster
So does this mean Sens radio games will be moving to 1310am?

Not necessarily.

The Senators already have a deal with Sportsnet for regional broadcasts that expires at the end of the season. The club has been happy with its partnership and would like to re-up the agreement.

But TSN -- which recently renamed radio rightsholder Team 1200 to TSN Radio -- might put together a package where they offer the Senators more money to pick up their TV and radio rights.

It's more money. Pretty sure its good for every NHL owner. Let's see in Eugene flows it through the team.

I'm not sure I'd be expecting much of a change this year quite yet.

A) The deal doesn't begin until next season.

B) Cap rises significantly in the following years and a lot of that cash may be used just to help us meet the cap floor/maintain internal budget, not necessarily to make us the big spenders many people are pining for.

Garrioch says it's an influx between $17-20M but he doesn't state if that's what we can expect on a yearly basis. I think and hope that it is, but so many numbers are being thrown around right now I'm a little confused.

The regional deal with SNET expires after this year too which means even more new money from either TSN or SNET. Also good.

So how is this going to work with TSN then? Are they still going to show at least some NHL hockey? I can't see the NHL shutting them out completely.

Apparently they still have regional rights to various teams.

One thing we know about TSN — it won’t go down without a fight. Duthie, Dreger, McKenzie and LeBrun are among the best in the biz, although let’s see how long it is before any or all opt to jump ship. As for NHL coverage, a TSN spokesperson said the network would have 10 Maple Leafs games next season under a regional agreement and, in addition, the network would have 26 regional Leafs games in 2015. TSN also has a deal for more than 60 regional Jets games through 2021 and still has the rights for the World Juniors and the World Championships

....so, even if they are showing games on tv, we will likely be blacked out. *sigh*

Kinda feels like they're positioning the networks so that most viewers will have to get Center Ice to see a decent number of games involving teams outside their immediate viewing area. Shame. :(

Seems like the only positive of the new deal is the Laffs won't be able to indoctrinate a new generation of kids across the country.

They had some Rogers guy on Sportsnet last night, he was saying that they may offer "Game Center Lite", where you could pay $5-6/month for other Canadian regional games that you wouldn't normally be able to watch.

My gut feeling is that this deal is bad in the long run. Short term I'm sure they'll keep everyone happy by blacking out as little as they can, offering up lots of content. Slowly over time more will switch to paid channels, or bundled with expensive packages to get the content. Also Rogers owns the rights on all media channels for those 12 years. Think what web, mobile and TV was like 12 years ago.

Looking forward to actually having Sens games on Saturday night again. HNIC had forced the Sens to move most Saturday night games to another time slot since there was no TV coverage.

The thing that didn't get a lot of mention is the fact that Rogers has editorial rights over all hockey broadcasts in Canada. This includes their own holdings CityTV and Sportsnet in all it's flavours, the CBC and their French counterpart TVA. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to imagine that it may even extend to print and online content if agreed to by any signatories to the sub-deals.

Not that this equates to having only one political party per country but it's still a bit strange that the NHL might end up with only one major TV source for discussion in the whole Canadian market. Technically Rogers could filter every comment on their broadcasts even HNIC (Ron and Don beware) and direct hosts to hold to a one-voice-for-all approach with possibly no room for independent dissenting expression. It's not too far fetched to think that some controversial topics might never see the light of day. It would be worse if even giant BCE/TSN/CTV had to toe the line to acquire access to Sportsnet replay videos for their own sports news broadcasts and discussion panel shows.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few years.

Exactly-with the news that the Sens have increased value by 73 percent over the last year and now all this new revenue we'd better not hear him crying poor or demanding a casino.

Most of his losses are because he chose from the start to pile debt on the team and uses loans and revenue to prop up his other business ventures.

The jig is up, start spending the money on the team and stop crying poor.

If it's true that all Canadian teams will be receiving upwards of 17 millions dollars per year then, Melnyk has no excuse not to spend money on the team. This is also good for all the Canadian teams because you can bet money on the fact that Rogers didn't spend all that money not to have Canadian teams in the NHL. No more folding of Canadian teams and no more threats of Ottawa or anyone else moving to Seattle. In fact I'm guessing we will see Quebec added very shortly.

Would be sweet if TSN grabbed the regional rights to Sens games.

I wouldn't even be mad.

Don't think the Sens would go for that. They will now get more exposure around the rest of Canada.

Kind of confused. So TSN can't broadcast NHL games nationally, right? That also includes non-canadian teams too? They only have regional rights to some leafs and jets games?

TSN has the best hockey guys, so you can't help but feel bad for them. CBC gets no money out of this from what I heard and that there may be layoffs.

Games that are played on Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday will be nationally televised on the various Rogers owned channels and CBC, no Centre Ice needed there. Bingo, we have a winner on protecting the next generation. I like it. :handclap:

Yes, those Sat. matinees are bad and a good chunk of those are on SNET so people outside of the SN East area had to watch on Centre Ice. The worst of that was last month, Oilers at Sens on a Saturday. An all canadian game and that was regional.

As far as I understand it they cannot show any NHL games nationwide.
They have rights to some local games such as Jets and some Leaf games. CBC is unlikely to lay people off. They have an agreement in place with Rogers to continue their HNIC broadcasts on Saturday nights for the next 4 years.
We could in theory see TSN SENS just like their is a TSN JETS channel.

The hockey experts at TSN will still have jobs, they will just focus more on the insider trading stuff instead of going to the games.

Eventually these people will start moving to different networks. TSN's broadcast quality will decline, Sporstnet's will become better.

My perfect scenario:

Galley returns to do Sportsnet games with Dean.
Denis Potvin returns to the drunk tank or whatever he does when he's not ruining hockey.

Any chance TSN picks up our rights after this season ends since our contract with Sportsnet is up??? Because that would be ****ing fantastic if we get games on TSN.
