If you grew up in the 80s or 90s in the NYC metro area then you saw commercials for the show constantly and it is knew one person with the VHS of the stage show. Nostalgia has to be a big reason it still has a following.

I saw it once a long long time ago on tape, and it is every bit the 80s Fever dream you would expect. It’s ridiculous.

The effects look both nightmarish and unfinished. The faces are like copy and pasted on.

No it didn't. Holy shit, no. The stage show had people dressed up like cats and acting like cats. The trailers look like...I don't even know. They're firmly situated dead centre in the uncanny valley, that's for sure.

Putting the whole concept of film aside, the fluidity of the CGI characters in the show is a f***ing train wreck.

Watch how Idris jumps, spins and lands on the hood of the truck at 0:33, it's like he's skating on a sheet of ice in mid air.



If you watch the trailer there are countless of other instances like this.

Edit: I don't mind musicals, and I could probably enjoy this is the CGI didn't look like a garbage fire.

I saw this live as a kid a couple of times as bit theatrical events - and every time I watch a trailer for the movie I feel kinda traumatized.

I'm trying to think of a "musical theatre --> movie" where i've been so consistently put off, but nothing's coming to mind.
