One of Saturn's moons
I have seen horror, and evil, and the darkest recesses of the human soul. But never had I seen....THIS.

As someone who had a guilty pleasure going to see the theater show in the 80s and fully appreciated the work involved, the music, the costumes, and the acting/acrobatics required for the roles, this "film" is an insult to anything associated with the original production, the book of poems it was based on, cats in general, and moviemaking as a whole. This is a disaster of biblical porportions. This is something where in Greek mythology Zeus got pissed off and reached down and unloaded a curse to end all curses.

All I kept thinking was that this was something that made me remember another monstrous disaster of film, the Brando/Kilmer "Island of Dr. Moreau" from the 90s. And for making me remember that dumpster fire I hate this movie even more.

It's not so much bad, as weirdly unsettling. I mean it is indeed bad, but in a way that is unlike any other movie I've ever seen. Wrong-headed and weird, but you almost have to see it to believe it.

I'm not unconvinced that you aren't Mark Kermode:

The reviews on this are fantastic, its so bad that the reviewers actually feel sympathy for not only the audience but the actors that took part. I'm betting that Vivid video had a board meeting to talk about making a porn version of this thing and decided that it was just a bad idea.

Ultimately, I think CATS will morph into something of an "event" like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

People will dress up like their favorite cats and dance an sing along to the film.

This article spells out why the change in the story line from the theater production to the movie version really crippled the narrative.

Grizabella the Glamor Cat is an aging cat who was famously beautiful and beloved before her prime years passed, and has now become a social outcast whom the other Jellicles do not trust.

In the context of the musical, the implication for Grizabella is that society has shunned her because she is an elderly woman.

This doesn’t work in the movie, where Old Deuteronomy has been gender-swapped to accommodate the casting of Judi Dench, so the shaming of Grizabella (now played by Jennifer Hudson) goes further by implying she was a sex worker who went to be pimped out by the criminal Macavity.

‘Cats’ Bound To Lose At Least $71M After All Ancillaries: Here’s How – Deadline

is bound to lose at least $71M — that is, if the pic reaches a global box office result of $100M, meaning $40M stateside and $60M abroad. This is based off a production cost of $90M net–the pic was shot on soundstages in London–and a $115M estimated global P&A

Does not look good for studio to limit losses to $71M if foreign box office performance this week is any indication as well as continued death at NA box office

Box Office: ‘Cats’ Declawed Overseas, ‘Jumanji’ and ‘Rise of Skywalker’ Hit Global Records

It’s back to the litter box for “Cats.” Universal’s big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical flamed out at the international box office, igniting with a dismal $13.6 million from 38 foreign territories.

Those ticket sales take the global tally of “Cats” to $38 million, including $17.8 million in North America. Directed by Tom Hooper, “Cats” cost $100 million, meaning it could lose some serious change for the studio.

Korea led the way overseas, pulling in $5 million from 470 locations. Australia ($1.17 million) and Germany ($1 million) were the only other markets to crack the million-dollar mark, placing “Cats” in fourth and seventh place on box office charts, respectively. The only major territories left to open are Russia (Jan. 2), Japan (Jan. 24) and Italy (Feb. 20)

Looks likely we are talking a $100M+ loss when this is all over

Somewhere Eddie Murphy is smiling because there's something worse then Pluto Nash.
While it is certainly in a category of its own, Cats is tough movie to compare other bad movies to. It's not bad the way Pluto Nash is bad. It's not bad the way most other moves can be bad. With Cats, it is not so much the execution that is bad as is its conception which was just fabulously wrong-headed in the extreme from the word go.

Tom Hooper's big-screen adaptation has clawed its way to $38 million US globally after two weeks in theaters, a dismal figure that could result in $100 million in theatrical losses, according to rival studio executives.

Cats cost $100 million to produce and set Universal back an additional $95 million to $100 million for global marketing and distribution fees, according to studio insiders. Adding to damages, Universal issued new prints of the movie to exhibitors with improved visuals during opening weekend.

The uncommon move came after Hooper's mad dash to complete the film in time to keep its Dec. 20 release date left editing blunders like a human hand, complete with a wedding ring, on Dench's Old Deuteronomy.

They should have left the editing bumbles in at this point and made it so that the guys from Mystery Science Theatre would do a show based around it.

What exactly was reason for rushing it to theaters to face Rise of Skywalker and Jumangi?

I get it the idea of counter programming , etc for audiences against those two films but they should have just held off releasing it to finish editing and effects

It wouldn't have changed much but at least it wouldn't have been a complete joke of a release with people watching film with half finished CGI and the negative attention that brought to further add to disaster that was film release

Christmas is still the best time to release something like this. There's been a big budget musical movie do well over the holiday break the last few years, and they probably felt that this was the only time they'd have a chance to make any money on it. If it got shelved, the WOM would only get worse, and at best, would quietly get dumped on the schedule and disappear just as quickly.

This reminds me of the "English Patient', many people got up and walked out and never returned. Somehow that movie won best picture, maybe "Cats" will too.

This is Taylor Swift.

Correction, it's Taylor’s face superimposed on the body of British model Annabelle Strutt.

Brit model was Taylor Swift’s ‘body double’ in Cats

'Cats' Visual Woes Began Early On In Production

Signs of trouble were there early on. Production began in December 2018 and wrapped in April. That's a tight postproduction schedule for a film featuring extensive and complex visual effects and a full cast rendered as performance capture-based, digital, fur-covered humanoid felines who perform dance moves in environments that combine live-action and digital sets.

Cats’ Memory not in Oscars.

Memory is the most popular song from the show and is a showstopper in almost every performance. I do believe that it is one of the big reasons why Cats is the fourth longest-running musical on Broadway. It has this big song that everybody waits for and which is the one best remembered after watching the show.

However, this does not mean that
Memory is automatically qualified to be nominated at the awards. This is because, although it comes from the musical on which the movie is based, it was not written specifically for the screen adaptation. And that is against the long-standing Hollywood rule.
