Did some research:
Player, age of contract start, % of salarycap when signed
Weber 26 13,10%
Subban 25 13,04%
Suter 27 12,56%
Letang 26 11,28%
Phaneuf 29 10,89%
Doughty 21 10,89%
Burns 32 10,95%
Hedman 25 10,79%
Byfuglien 30 10,41%
Ekblad 20 10,27%
Karlsson 22 10,11%
Pietrangelo 23 10,11%
Carlson 28 10,06%
Keith 26 9,75%
Seabrook 31 9,63%
Enström 27 9,58%
Vlasic 31 9,33%
Giordano 31 9,25%
Shattenkirk 28 8,87%
Yandle 30 8,7%
Fowler 26 8,67%
Girardi 30 8,55% (bought out)
Myers 21 8,55%
OEL 21 8,55% (current one)
Bouwmeester 30 8,40%
Niskanen 27 8,33%
Green 30 (27) 8,22% (10,14% previous)
E Johnson 27 8,22%
Boychuck 31 8,22%
Bogosian 23 8,0%

And keep in mind that pretty much every contract signed pre-27 years of age bought some RFA years (IOW more costcontrolled)

So % wise, better than Niskanen’s

Lol at people who thought he would sign with the Leafs or something. Get your own #1D!

This is my contention with quite a few Leafs fans. The belief that every single star player wants to play there with absolutely no evidence to substantiate. I still recall a TO fan that claimed his vast hockey knowledge lent him to believe Alex Steen would have a better career than Ovy.

I was scared of the Islanders after they had money to spend and Trotz

Money to spend on a coach to try and sway your own top tier UFA to stay and enough to lure the top UFA dman from his cup team that's mostly staying intact are two different things. If Carlson wanted another crack at a cup he'd head for a team that is/was a contender this year with few changes for the coming season and had enough cap room to pay him. One of those teams fits that criteria and he doesn't have to uproot his family to do it. If all he cared about was getting the fattest contract he could he would have said up front he's going to see what offers he receives. In that case he'd have likely been dealt at the draft.

Man, people on here comparing Carlson to OEL.

I agree Carlson is a great defenseman and I’m stoked he stayed. However, OEL is really good. I’ve seen him a lot and love watching his game. He’s really, really good. He’s just on a shit team.

Or he looks good because he is on a shitty team.

Yeah I think OEL defensively is better than Carlson but he lacks the "snarl" that Carlson has and that makes a difference to me.

OEL be willing to stay in Arizona also tells me all I ever need to know about him. I don't want to hear they are young and on the rise cause maybe they are but it will be a long while before they are ready to challenge.

You may remember that based on skills alone Mike Green was rated to go early in the first round. He fell to the end of the first round because his junior team sucked really bad and he never played in any pressure situations.

Honestly wasn't expecting him to take anything under this. I'm happy with it.

edit: think we can thank his wife too. Seems she had no intention of leaving.

If Carlson got burned as hard as OEL as often he'd have been run out of town a long time ago.

OEL is smooth skating, swedish, plays on a bad sunbelt and has a great shot. If he got out of there his hype would drop faster than JayBo's.

An expansion team in their division just won the western conference. They could be in the Final next season!

John will be at Kettler today at 11am. I may be there too. Where's the DCamp schedule? I imagine something is happening today, if only measurements and testing.
