He will be a pending UFA who can be claimed like anyone else. See Chris Thorburn who was claimed by Vegas and never signed.

Even if he has a full NMC he still does not need to be protected. See Joe Thornton who was a pending UFA with an NMC who was exposed to Vegas, not claimed, and then re signed with San Jose a week later.

The issue is that on what season is the protection needed. Based on what you wrote, the NMC would be for the 2021-22 season?

He can have a full NMC for both years of his deal and still be exposed to Vegas. Teams are not forced to protect players with an NMC if the contract is expiring.

Gardiner is a fine player, but I don't want him @ a huge cap hit for 7 years. Overpaying for mid tier UFAs is how you sink a franchise.
