If this trade would have gone thru pre-Schmidt HF would be universally singing Vancouvers praise for complete theft from a desperate franchise. No Pod, no Hog, no Demko, no Rathbone and they also get to dump Sutter?

Its a complete shite deal for Arizona even in this environment.

Vancouver just happened to pull off an even bigger coup in real life with Schmidt.

Thank god Arizona didn't accept that. Poor trade for both sides

Canucks dodged a bullet by not taking on OEL's contract and fortunately the Schmidt trade landed in the management's lap whose is a far better fit for Vancouver.

Arizona GM wanted a home run he could sell to the club. Virtanen and Sutter is no home run, even with a 1st and 2nd. Heck Sutter is a cap dump.

Bad deal for both sides.

No high end pieces for Arizona (no disrespect to Virtanen) dispute giving up a top pairing D.

No major cap relief for Vancouver, while taking on a huge contract for years to come.

This just would have sucked for all concerned.

Without knowing what years the picks were in makes it tough to gauge the offer. If the Canucks were able to get OEL and keep our 4 best prospects and Demko, that is a pretty big win. I can see why AZ turned the deal down though. I wanted it to happen, but am happy with the way everything ended up.

The biggest piece coming back for Arizona here would be the $56+ million in cap space over the next seven years.

No doubt, but reading comments in this thread, it seems like the cover for the trade (or a secondary objective) was to get a "win" for the club, that OEL wasn't meant to be simply a cap dump.

Arizona’s screwed by their ex GM. Feel sorry for the fans who are being unfairly punished by his actions. Hopefully they can make some moves and recoup some draft picks and get things going in the right direction again. Enjoyed the discussions with their fans on here even if we didn’t always agree on things. A good group!
