If this trade would have gone thru pre-Schmidt HF would be universally singing Vancouvers praise for complete theft from a desperate franchise. No Pod, no Hog, no Demko, no Rathbone and they also get to dump Sutter?

Surprised Arizona rejected that if true. They won’t get a better offer in the flat cap era imo. And they desperately need draft picks with all of their forfeited picks. Boston’s offer must have been truly horrible though.

Nope. Sutter and Virtanen ccombined were quite a bit less than OEL. plus that is a huge waste of assets. Schmidt is almost as good.

The worst thing about the Schmidt trade is that every stinky proposal on this forum now is going to come with the disclaimer “but Schmidt went for a 3rd!!!”.

Schmidt is the better option by far. Thank god this didn’t happen.
Unless Phx was retaining half this is a massive overpayment. OEL is approaching cap dump territory with that contract.

I’d easily take the Schmidt deal over this but I understand why the Yotes said no
No high end pieces for Arizona (no disrespect to Virtanen) dispute giving up a top pairing D.
No major cap relief for Vancouver, while taking on a huge contract for years to come.

Well, they didn’t have to trade him. It’s not like he requested a trade.
Without knowing what years the picks were in makes it tough to gauge the offer. If the Canucks were able to get OEL and keep our 4 best prospects and Demko, that is a pretty big win. I can see why AZ turned the deal down though. I wanted it to happen, but am happy with the way everything ended up.

The biggest piece coming back for Arizona here would be the $56+ million in cap space over the next seven years.
He's an expiring usable player that just has an unfortunate AAV.
What killed the deal was not getting one of Vancouver's good prospects included.
Even if we now pay a 2nd to dump some salary, we still win here.
Arizona’s screwed by their ex GM. Feel sorry for the fans who are being unfairly punished by his actions. Hopefully they can make some moves and recoup some draft picks and get things going in the right direction again. Enjoyed the discussions with their fans on here even if we didn’t always agree on things. A good group!
